Black Squirrel Half Marathon

The new Black Squirrel Half Marathon will be held at Lory State Park on Saturday, Aug 31st. The course is a full loop around the outer perimeter of the park, mostly single track with a few miles of dirt road, and about 2,000ft of climbing.

If you can't run, we can always use volunteers.

More info and registration details are online here:

Fun working as a volunteer at the last aid station. A bit different than a road race aid station. Getting some extra thanks from some of the runners after the race was a nice extra plus. Anyone who races but has never worked as a volunteer I would encourage you to do so. Volunteer for a road or trail race.

Hi Pete. Im interested in finishing the Black Squirrel. It would be my first trail race. I've finished 8 half road races & 1 full road race. I've been to the website & I understand it will be very challenging. I was thinking of it as part of my training for a full road race in October. I'm very, very slow(I average A 3 hour road race half marathon) because I have left sided cerbral palsy, but I'm determined to finish what I start. I'd be very interested any training "runs" for the Black Squirrel half. Or if you think there would be better trail races that would better, I'm open for suggestions.
    Thanks,Denise

Hi Denise, We haven't set any official cut offs in stone yet but are currently planning to give people at least 5 hours to finish. As soon as the Lory bridges are rebuilt, we'll have a few of our locals go out and run the course to get an accurate idea of the time everyone will need. Our goal is to make this race open to new trail runners and if you put the time in to training on the trails this summer, I don't see why you couldn't finish. Our Tuesday and Thursday runs are great opportunities to meet our local trail runners and get feedback and training advice. So if you can join us on any of these, you'll be able to get a lot of info and support. I don't have any specific training runs planned yet but will try to organize one or two group runs in Lory this summer. You can also join the trail runners Yahoo group and post any time to find someone to run with. We have plenty of runners who would be a good match for your speed.
