Fluid vs Adaptive Design, A Discussion

There are colloquially two main camps when it comes to Responsive Web Design: fluid web design and adaptive web design. With fluid web design, you start with a fluid grid and add media queries where the design breaks ideally based on your specific content and design. In adaptive web design, you build various sized static designs/layouts usually based on known device sizes.

I'd like to hold this meetup a little bit differently than others. While there are many people who all feel one way is better than another (or think you can, gasp!, use both), I think it'll be more productive to treat this meetup as a group discussion, where we can collectively suss out what works best for each individual. I'll start the meetup with an introduction of the topic, and we can go from there.

Just in case, here's the link get.gaug.es; if anyone is using this or does try it out, I'd appreciate your comments.

I really enjoyed the format of the discussion. It was moderated with compassion and guided focus. Sam Richard gave everyone a chance to express their opinion(s), and encouraged the exchange of ideas. The questions were answered with clarity and excellent knowledge. I am so glad to be part of this superb community. I came to this Meetup expecting to be somewhat in over my head, but I left the Meetup with immensely useful new knowledge and good guidance as to what to focus on. It is very rare to have a discussion forum like this for someone like me who is very new to web design. It is very important to me to learn from the experts in a direct way, and to hear it through real world experience.

Do we need to sort out any security on advance of arrival?

You've got your full name and you're on the list, you should be good. Just remember your ID when you get here tonight

How can I add one guest to my RSVP?

    November 13, 2012

    • Sam R.

You, unfortunately, cannot at this time. Registration closed a week ago and while I was able to get the handful of additional people in who gave me full names, due to the security restrictions of the building we cannot allow users to bring anonymous guests. Those users who have guests signed up before I was able to make the change, and those guests may not be able to get in.
If you send me the full name of your guest, I will work with Condé Nast to try and allow them in, but I am unable to guarantee now or in the future. I'm sorry.

Something's come up and I have to bail. Really wish I could have attended this one.

I was able to add everyone who has asked since registration closed, but am not going to be able to add anyone else.

Registration for our events generally close 1 week before the event itself due to security restrictions at the venues we host at. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but it's beyond my control at the moment.

Will this be recorded, slides available, or notes?

    November 9, 2012

    • Sam R.

Like last time, we're going to work on recording it, but considering the format, there aren't going to be slides. If someone takes notes, happy to post them.
