"Uptown Downstairs Abbey" Tea Party

With the popularity of PBS' Downton Abbey and the revival of BBC's Upstairs Downstairs, we decided it would be fun to do a dress-up Tea Party inspired by these shows, presented by the staff of the delicious 24K Chocolat Cafe restaurant (which is in the basement ["downstairs"] of Ancient Future, in Midtown ["uptown"]).

Victorian, Roaring '20s, Steampunk, Sunday Best, fancy hats, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, or any other high tea, tea party or dress up costumes or fashions of any era or imagination are welcome! Have fun with it!

This is a public event, and we'll be joined by members of the Sacramento Steampunk Society and the League of Proper Villains, and all are welcome (including well-behaved children).

This chocoholics tea party will also be a light continental-type brunch -- you'll get a variety of loose leaf tea, drinking chocolate, chocolate truffles, scones, cheeses and fruit, catered by 24 K Cafe, included in the $22 price.

We'll also be treated to a presentation of the history, culture, legends and lore of the teas!

The Cafe's tea specialist and tea intern will provide the fun and interesting program called The Lusty Leaf, a bit of tea history that spans the Industrial Revolution era of Great Britain.  It involves fun and intrigue with tea facts.  This presentation will be interactive!

The tea party will take place in the large Urban Sanctuary room of the Ancient Futures building on 24th & K St. After, we are welcome to relax or pose for pictures in their Serenity Garden.

We had a wonderful time! It was our first Meetup, but definitely not our last. Everyone knows how hard it is to keep teens interested, but my two really had a great time (especially munching on the food and The Always Divine Truffels). Thanks for the photos they really captured the flair of the event. Can't wait for more!

Fantastic event -- Kudos to Steph for the great organization. Learned a lot, tea and treats were yummy, and met interesting folks -- what more could you ask for?

I'm in! The only thing is, I am new to steam punk and need to know/need help getting costume ideas and places to possibly shop.

Best bet is scouring thrift shops, or Evangeline's costume mansion in Old Sac. There's lots of articles that can be googled too, such as this one: http://www.lovelyish.... And you might find this FB Group a good resource: https://www.facebook.c... But since this is event is only loosely Steampunk, feel free to mix things up and put your spin on things -- really, that's what Steampunk is all about anyway -- so feel free to mix and borrow from various eras. An elegant hat and/or some long pearls and/or fancy shoes or dressy boots can go along way to give an outfit a Steampunk or Tea Party feel, as can anything lacy or with ruffles.

I'm attending another Downton Abbey Tea in Pioneer on June 30 and am bringing two teenagers (13 & 16) to both events. I found outfits for both of them at Goodwill on Florin Road for under $75. Dress, hat and jewelry for the girl, suit coat, pants, white shirt, hat and shoes for the young man! Both of them can't wait to wear them. One of the fun things you can do is dress up a cheaper hat - add some silk flowers, feathers, ribbon, pearls... Remember Downton Abbey takes place shortly after the sinking of the Titantic through the Edwardian age, so let your imagination flow. Looking forward to meeting everyone on Sat!

    I'm still in as well!
@Theresa: I would be interested to hear from others what resources exist around Sac. The two best shops I know are over in San Fran:
Five and Diamond in the Mission: http://www.fiveanddiamond.com
    Distractions on Haight: http://www.distractionsonhaight.com
I think 5&D has better prices, and Distractions has better selection

Is this a kid friendly event?

    • Steph of w.

Yes, as long as they're well behaved. (Wouldn't want any broken tea pots!) :)
