TOWEL DAY PARTY!!! (2nd annual!) aka Geek Pride Day! @Steph's

  • Steph's house

If you are not familiar with Towel Day, don't panic! Towel Day, held every May 25, is a tribute to the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and celebrates author Douglas Adams' contributions to science fiction; you can learn more at www.towelday.org

A towel, Adams wrote, is "the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have."

While I don't actually recommend hitchhiking here, I do recommend bringing (or wearing?) your favorite towel on the evening of May 25 to my house for a casual gameroom & backyard potluck party.  There will be air hockey, games, drinks and conversation. And maybe we'll light up the firepit and/or put in a movie later in the evening.

Along with a towel, please bring a dish to share.

BTW, May 25 is also "Geek Pride Day", so we have even more reason to celebrate (even if you aren't an Adams fan):

This Saturday is Towel Day, Star Wars' anniversary, and the Glorious 25 of May! In fact, it's so jam-packed with awesome we like to call it Geek Pride Day.

I will be driving from the Elverta area about 6:30pm. Does anyone need a ride from the Elverta, Rio Linda or North Natomas areas?

I will bring s'mores ingredients in case we do a bonfire, perhaps a few hard-boiled eggs in homage to Discworld, and possibly pasta salad as well.

      No need, that's plenty. Thanks!

Smores & eggs is plenty, you don't have to do the pasta salad too. :-)

    Sounds like fun.

Since it's also the anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, I'm thinking it might be fun to watch that later in the evening. Or at least have it on in the background. :)

I think that would be a great idea! A mock (satirical) space epic party with a space epic film showing!

A couple folks have asked me about costumes. This is a casual, mostly backyard party. I expect it be hot, and then maybe later cold. It's not a costume party per se, but if you want to wear or bring a bathroom (maybe in case it cools down?), that would be cool. If you do, recommend shorts underneath, not warm flannel jammies. :) Again, remember, it's late May, it should be hot. So I recommend leaving the Vogon or Marvin masks at home. :) But costume or no, do bring a towel. Mostly, the point is to have fun and be comfortable doing it, so do whatever you think it most fun!

      MOST IMPORTANTLY: DON'T PANIC! ;)

I'm actually on that part now about the bathrobe in "Life, the Universe and Everything." Yeah, it would be kind of hard for each of us to bring our own bathrooms to the party. lol Perhaps even harder yet to wear it. lol

I'm going to try to remember to send out an email with my address Thursday or Friday, but if I forget, feel free to email or call me. Also, please don't forget that this is a potluck. Thanks!

Sounds like a good time we will be there with our towels

I probably won't be able to stay too long (about an hour or so) because I may have some cousins' college graduation to attend. But I'll be there for at least part of it.

I don't need to dress like Zaphod Bebelbrox do I?

    May 17, 2013

    • Steph of w.

No. It's not a costume party. Not that costumes are forbidden, but it's just not a costume party per se. Just bring a towel. :) It's really just an excuse for a backyard party, more than anything else. I'm not even decorating this time. It's a good party house as is, with plenty of geeky decor and plenty to do. :)

What time does the towel party end?

    May 10, 2013

    • Steph of w.

When I kick you all out because I am exhausted or you all leave or midnight, whatever comes first. :-)

      May 11, 2013

    • Lon

I'm going to try to be there.

      1 · May 13, 2013

I should be back from Clockwork Alchemy for an evening party.

Also, having a towel means I don't have to scrub down the dusty backyard furniture as much. ;) Or you can use it to sit on the grass if you prefer! We could also do a bonfire if it cools off enough at night. And just because it's a backyard party, doesn't mean we can't also go back inside a watch a video later in the evening if we so all feel like. :)
