This is a temporary replacement for the weekly Kick Ass Hill and Boot Buster Hill hikes.

We will hike the streets of Auburn, through various neighborhoods, seeking out the steepest hills we can find. We will hike at a moderately fast pace to keep up our conditioning.

I estimate this to be a minimum of 6 miles - and depending on routes, possibly 7-8. By hiking at a fast pace, we should complete this hike in 2-2.5 hours.

Please bring a headlamp or flashlight, water, and good walking shoes - and a great sense of humor is always appreciated. :)

MEETUP LOCATION IS RAILHEAD PARK IN AUBURN. From Sacramento/Roseville, travel east on I-80. Take the Maple St. exit. Stay straight on Maple Street, which turns into Auburn/Folsom Rd. at the first stoplight (Lincoln Way). Go through two more stoplights (High St./Sacramento St. and Racetrack), then turn left at the third stoplight, which is Pacific Ave. Continue straight on Pacific until you see the parking lot for Railhead Park on your left. There are restrooms and a drinking fountain available at this park.

It is not clear if this park closes at dusk (as the sign says), and since there is a gate that can be locked, it has been suggested that we park outside of the park, along the street, just to be sure our cars aren't stuck in there.

I really liked the new scenery! Some people might call them driveways. We call them short cuts! (Inside joke)

Chilly weather, warm company, handcuffs and bells, dripping icicle lights and "almost" 10 miles of brisk walking. Another great evening with wonderful people. Thanks Cheryl for your navigation skills and leadership. Looking forward to the next one..now off to my singing lesson so I can be ready.

Wait did I say "singing" lesson? I meant "bling" lesson. It's so I can better wear my bell and lights. Damn auto correct! lol

Hey all, I've been wanting to get a hiking app for my Iphone and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about the best one out there?

    December 5, 2013

    • Cheryl Z

I use mapmyhike. They also have mapmyrun/walk/ride, etc. I think Lee uses that one, too. It's pretty good.

      December 5, 2013

    • Graydon

Thanks for the info. I'll check both those apps out.

A nice chilly evening, perfect for hiking with warm friends. We meandered about the streets of Auburn, got at least one good hill in and just had a fun time, as we usually do. Thank you to all who participated - you guys make this group so much fun. It really is a bright spot in the week.

Just to be safe, we should probably park along the street by the park. There is a sign that says the park closes at dusk (we know all about that!), and since there is a gate that locks, I don't want our cars stuck in there. Ron asked at the parks dept., and they weren't clear if it gets locked, so we best park along the street. Thanks.

Still fighting off virus, maybe catch you on the next hike. However, if the orange jumpsuit is required, I don't look good in them Have a great hike.

Sorry you are not feeling well. Please join us when you can and we'll fill you in on why the location has changed. Oh, and very few of us look good in orange jumpsuits :) Take care.

Please note the change in directions to Railhead Park - Thank You, Kathy.

Hi Cheryl, this looks like a fun work-out. I live in Auburn and in reading over your directions, I have some corrections. Those taking the Maple Street exit off I 80 will not go through any stop signs before the light at Lincoln Way (which is where Maple Street changes to Auburn/Folsom Rd.). After going through this light they will go through TWO more lights (one at High St./Sacramento St. and the other at Racetrack). They will turn left at the THIRD one (Pacific Ave). I hope this helps..................

    • Cheryl Z

Hi Kathy, thanks for the corrections. I had copied the directions from another group's similar hike and did not test it out myself. Thank you very much. I hope you join us.

To Eric, I attended this hiking group for the first time 2 wks ago, under the recommendation of a crazy Bonnie (Watch out for her). On arrivel, the host warned me that this was a serious hiking group and to be ready to walk at a fast pace, have good shoes on, carry water, a head light, a compass, flare gun, matches, a tent and satellite phone. Tell them the phone number of a close relative, two friends, my insurance carrier, and any last wishes I might have, before I could go on the hike. After satisfying the above, I happy, and excitedly started my hike. 14 merry souls started out. The weather was great, then it happened, we got off course, in a law forsaken land and time The Law came at us from all sides. We fought the Law and the law won. I am sure you will be in good hands, this time around. They seem like a good group of people, who learn fast from pass experiences. I do not think they lost anyone on that last trip, or at least they bailed them out.

Well all my supplies are packed, 10 person tent will be large enough right. I will be sure to notify my next of kin before we depart for Everest, aka Auburn CA.

Have not gotten to know Rachel yet and not because she is young, beautiful, intelligent, fit, together and well liked! It's just that...will get back to you on that. Cheryl and Ron always say such wonderful things about Rachael and am sincere when I say I hope she continues to hike with this group.

A reference to the unlikely but possible consequences of being caught hiking in a California State Park after sunset...It's a long story :-)
