The hike is located on Highway 49, 1/4 of a mile from the green gate (#150).

The beginning of the trail is easy going on a flat fire road, that meanders along the beautiful American river.  We then traverse up a fairly short incline to meet with the switchback dirt hiking path of the PG&E road trail which leads to the rock quarry.

The short part of the trail leads us to fascinating and stunning views of two towering rocks. At this point, we will have two options - the advanced option is the Boot Buster Hill. We have yet to gauge the steepness, length, and elevation gains of this hill but it is indeed strenuous, so be prepared for a good work-out.

The intermediate option is to go to the left of Boot Buster Hill, where the incline is less strenuous. Both paths meet at the top, for awesome views of the American River and the stunning rock formations.

If you have experienced hiking Training Hill and Kick Ass Hill, this represents an additional challenge. It is however, shorter than any of those two hills and has been climbed by others before. There are semi-worn but established steps along the hill for most of the way up, but gloves are recommended as you'll use your hands for balance.

Please bring a headlamp or flashlight, plenty of water, snacks and gloves.

The hike for Boot Buster Hill is approx. 5 miles and can be completed in under 2 hours.

As a special treat, our awesome guest yogi - Jody - will lead us in a little modified yoga session (20 minutes, or so) at the top of the hill. A perfect way to stretch those climbing muscles!

After our yoga session, we'll come back on the Quarry Trail and those of us who feel rejuvenated can continue on and do Training Hill.

Directions: From Hwy. 80, heading east towards Auburn, take the Elm Street Exit. Turn left at the stoplight, following signs for 49S, towards Placerville and Cool. Turn left at the next stoplight, onto Hwy. 49S. Continue down Hwy. 49 into the canyon, and turn right at the confluence. Cross over the bridge and start looking for places to park on the right side of the road. Parking here is free. The trailhead is on the other side of the road, about 1/4 mile up from the bridge. There is parking here, but costs $10.

Wow - another wonderful hike with that awesome yoga session at the top of the quarry, looking down over the amazing American River. It doesn't get any better than that! Thank You, Jody! We got to scale up the rocks to enter the tunnel from the front side - Thank You, Dave! Welcome to our newbies - great job tackling both Boot Buster and Training Hills! This was one more of our fun Wednesday hikes, to add to our beautiful memories. And thank you, Bonnie, for taking the candid yoga shots. Great job.

Yoga at the top of the hill is way beyond the hiking experience. What a way to get my feet back on the ground and my mind to shut down. Thank you Jody

I had the time of my life!! Got a little scared though because somehow a small group and I got separated. Thank-you Eugene and Elder for your excellent navigation skills in getting us back. I wasn't looking forward to spending the night out in the wild! I will see everyone after my three week vacation.

Can't seem to find my yoga pants; oh wait, that's right, they were recalled by Lululemon. Sorry guys, gonna have to just wear my dirty hiking pants instead. Hope that's okay? :-)

Hi! I'm coming from Elk Grove. I'm bad with directions and driving. Do you have an address where I can depend on my GPS to get me to the Quarry trailhead please? thank you!

    April 14

    • Cheryl Z

Hi Denise, I've updated the map to give better gps coordinates. I hope that helps. We park along the side of the road, on Hwy. 49S, and will meet at the Quarry Trailhead. There is a sign at the trailhead.
