The hike is located on Highway 49, 1/4 of a mile from the green gate (#150).

The beginning of the trail is easy going on a flat fire road, that meanders along the beautiful American river.  We then traverse up a fairly short incline to meet with the switchback dirt hiking path of the PG&E road trail which leads to the rock quarry.

The short part of the trail leads us to fascinating and stunning views of two towering rocks. At this point, we will have two options - the advanced option is the Boot Buster Hill. We have yet to gauge the steepness, length, and elevation gains of this hill but it is indeed strenuous, so be prepared for a good work-out.

The intermediate option is to go to the left of Boot Buster Hill, where the incline is less strenuous. Both paths meet at the top, for awesome views of the American River and the stunning rock formations.

If you have experienced hiking Training Hill and Kick Ass Hill, this represents an additional challenge. It is however, shorter than any of those two hills and has been climbed by others before. There are semi-worn but established steps along the hill for most of the way up, but gloves are recommended as you'll use your hands for balance.

At the top of the Quarry we will enjoy a little yoga session, guided by our wonderful yogi, Jody. After we are all stretched and relaxed, we will bring out our picnic dinner and enjoy some great food and conversation, while overlooking the beautiful American river.

Please bring a headlamp or flashlight, plenty of water, snacks and gloves.

Directions: From Hwy. 80, heading east towards Auburn, take the Elm Street Exit. Turn left at the stoplight, following signs for 49S, towards Placerville and Cool. Turn left at the next stoplight, onto Hwy. 49S. Continue down Hwy. 49 into the canyon, and turn right at the confluence. Cross over the bridge and start looking for places to park on the right side of the road. Parking here is free. The trailhead is on the other side of the road, about 1/4 mile up from the bridge. There is parking here, but costs $10.

WOW - yet another "best night ever!" We enjoyed a beautiful evening hike - a warm one, indeed! The yoga overlooking the river was awesome - thank you, Jody. The picnic dinner was fabulous! What a trooper Kathy was - joining us just a few hours out of the ER - you are a machine, girl! AND - I came home with an overflowing box of wishes - it is so full of good thoughts, that the lid won't stay closed. THANK YOU ALL! It was an amazing evening - topped off perfectly by jumping into our beautiful American River. Thank you all for such a special evening. I will truly treasure this memory.

We are keeping this hike shorter this week, and adding a yoga session and the picnic - the mileage for the hike will only be 5 miles RT.

Welcome, Monique. If you have done Training Hill, you should have no problem on this hike. We will be having a picnic dinner this week, so we will all be carrying a food item, and beverages, in our packs, so we may all be a bit slower this week as well.

This is the week we will do our picnic dinner at the top of the Quarry. We will have an All-American picnic, overlooking the American river. How perfect is that??? Please bring a food item and/or beverage to share, as well as your own utensils for eating.
