The hike is located on Highway 49, 1/4 of a mile from the green gate.

Much of the beginning of the trail is easy going on flat fire road and pavement. It links up to other trails as part of the Auburn State Recreation Area (ASRA).

After a short distance, the beautiful American River becomes visible as we traverse up a fairly short incline to meet with the switchback dirt hiking path of the PG&E road trail which leads to the rock quarry.

The short part of the trail leads us to fascinating and stunning views of two towering rocks. At this point, we will have two options - the advanced option is the Boot Buster Hill. We have yet to gauge the steepness, length, and elevation gains of this hill but it is indeed strenuous, so be prepared for a good work-out.

The intermediate option is to go to the left of Boot Buster Hill, where the incline is less strenuous. Both paths meet at the top, for awesome views of the American River.

If you have experienced hiking Training Hill and Alan's Kick A** Hill, this represents an additional challenge. It is however, shorter than any of those two hills and had been climbed by others before. There are semi-worn but established steps along the hill for most of the way up, but you'll still need your gloves for balance.

Great hike. People were cooperative and watching out for each other. Leader (Cheryl Z) did an excellent job. The advanced option up the hill was fun and a tad challenging in a very good way. I hope to do it again.

Thank you all for making this such an enjoyable hike. Thank you also for being patient with our late start. Kudos to those who went up the advanced portion of the hill. Great job!

I will be at the green gate shortly before 6:00, for those that aren't familiar with the area. For those that want to meet by the Quarry Trail parking area, across the road, we'll see you there shortly after 6:00.

Yes Michael upon making a right turn heading to Cool and crossing the bridge, you'll see the green gate to your right. Park alongside the cars there and walk the opposite side of hwy. 49 where you'll see other hikers.

Is the green gate an obvious landmark? Is there parking around there?

    Hi Kathy,
I don't have exact mileage on the hike yet, but it is under 5 miles. Most of the trail is fairly level. The "boot buster" part of the hill is quite a bit steeper than Pig Farm, but not as long. The views at the top are worth it!
