In the 1980s I was intrigued by Japanese economic success, the strong contrast between eastern-western cultures, and an underlying appreciation of Buddhism. Because of this interest, I volunteered for business travel to Asian countries and enjoyed it greatly.
Conversation practice. New friends.
I lived in Kicjijouji, western outskirts of Tokyo, 1994-1996. Interestingly, my culture shock coming back to California was much harder than when entering Japan. It seemed people were so rude, quality and service so poor, and everything so big.
