In an effort to better meet the diverse needs of our members, we will follow a new format in our weekly meetups. We'll start out with a lesson geared towards beginners. Each week we'll have a different lesson, based on a free online source. Please take time before the meeting to read the lesson at least once. Then at the start of our Thursday meetup, we'll review, discuss, and practice the material in the lesson. While this part will benefit beginners the most, I hope that more advanced speakers will offer feedback and assistance.
*This week, the lesson will be from CCTV's program Growing Up With Chinese. We'll study Lesson 5: Simple Enquiries. You'll watch a video, featuring Xiaoming (a Chinese teenager) and Mike (a freakishly blonde foreign exchange student). Click here for a pdf file of the script (including hanzi, pinyin, and English translation). Please watch the video at least once before the meetup. You may also want to print out the pdf and take notes or write down any questions you may have about the program, so we can discuss them at the meetup.
Following the study session, we'll have 30 minutes of Mandarin Conversation. I will set a timer for 30 minutes, and during this time we ask you to please speak Mandarin ONLY. Naturally, this will be easier for those who are upper intermediate or better. But it also gives those of us a lower levels a chance for challenging practice. Even if you have zero knowledge of Mandarin, this can be a valuable opportunity to listen and get familiar with the sounds of the language.
After the 30 minutes is up, we can spend the rest of the time socializing. You can continue speaking in Mandarin if you like, or whatever language you prefer. =)
