January 2013 Sacramento Speakers Network Meeting

Where: Doubletree Hotel 2001 Point West Way Sacramento, CA 95815

Meeting Fee: $15 for PREPAY ON LINE, $20 AT THE DOOR

Meetup Description: We meet on the first Wednesday each month to discuss the business of speaking and work on ways to help each other find more speaking opportunities. We are open to experienced speakers as well as those just getting started. Our meetings generate a lot of energy and ideas!

We invite attendees to participate and share ideas and challenges since this is how we each find unique value in attending. Also, many of our members are business owners and are finding ways to team up and do business with each other outside of the group. Lots of great networking is happening here!

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a leads group. If your primary objective is to sell something, this isn't the group for you. We are here to help each other grow and prosper!

6:30 to 7:00pm: Informal Networking

7:00 to 8:30pm:

*Introductions and Speaking Engagement Announcements

*Guest Speaker: Craig Harrison

The Speaker As Storyteller: Unleashing the Power of Story To Enhance Your Speaking Prowess
A key ingredient in any speaker's toolkit is Story. More than just telling your signature story, as a speaker you can use stories of varying length and type to open and close your program, transition between segments, illustrate key points within your speech or training, and to engage your audience throughout. Are you telling yours? If not, why not?

This session will help put you back in touch with your storytelling self. You'll see how stories:
* Break down barriers
* Involve you audience
* Engender their stories
* Connect on a heart level with listeners
* Build trust
* Make your points memorable and thus transferable (and on occasion even viral).

As a group, we'll also mine our past for stories of our own we can tell to with different twists to accentuate our own learning points and themes. We'll also discuss story spines — structures for framing stories.

Whether you are using stories in keynotes, training, consulting, facilitation, or your sales process, this session will help you cultivate, polish or perfect your stories and show you new ways of incorporating stories into your work. Come prepared with your own stories or the seeds of new stories to sow. This session will leave you with new stories and the confidence to incorporate them into your programs.

Professional speaker Craig Harrison has been telling stories in and out of school since the age of 11 when he went door-to-door in his hometown of Berkeley selling Recycled Jokes. The adult Craig Harrison founded to help organizations improve their sales and service skills and sharpen their communication and leadership prowess. Harrison is a past president of the National Speakers Association--Northern California chapter, was the driving force behind the formation of its Pro-Track program and founded the Storytellers Professional Emphasis Group (PEG) in NSA. He's also a leader in the Storytelling Association of California, Bay Area Storytelling Festival and National Storytelling Network, and traveled to China with 40 other storytellers in 2006 on a storytelling cultural exchange program. Visit his websites for more information and resources:, and

*Goals and Challenges - How can we help you? We will draw names for the opportunity to share your challenges in the 5-minute spotlight.

    I enjoyed the meeting a lot. Craig was great. His tale about selling jokes door-to-door was a brilliant illustration of the power of story. It was also a great place to meet new people in Sac (I'm new here). And Joel ... what a surprise to see a fellow Marin-ite!

    I want to make the Sacramento government relations and lobbying community aware that I've relocated to California. I've worked in 47 states speaking to conventions and lobby days and am hoping to connect with organizations in CA. Lobbyists and government relations people hire me to activate, educate and motivate ordinary people to make contact with elected officials, sort of like sales training, only in a political/policy context.
