How long have you been conscious that you no longer believe in gods? Has the realization altered things in your life?

I discovered I no longer believed half way through reading The God Delusion in 2008. I now see the world in a totally new light and live my life for wife and myself, not for some promised reward or threat after death.

What led you to abandon your faith in the prevailing mythologies of the culture? Was it a sudden realization? Triggered by an event? Or did you just gradually evolve to this position without realizing it until it was done?

My path to atheism was a gradual process of learning and asking questions. It culminated after four or five years of study and self reflection with the realization that I no longer believed the lies I had been fed my entire life.

What belief system were you raised in?

I was raised as a Catholic. I even became confirmed. My only regret is that my family hasn't joined me in shedding the shackles of the church and seen religion for what it really is; fairy tales for grown ups.
