Sailing Ship Onrust on the Navesink

To commemorate the 350th anniversary of the first settlers to put down roots in Monmouth County, the Onrust, a replica of the original 17th-century Dutch ship that was built in New York Harbor, will sail to Highlands and the Navesink, where it will be open to the public.

The Onrust is similar to the ships that brought the first settlers to Monmouth's shores in 1664. It will dock at Fair Haven Yacht Works, 75 DeNormandie Ave., Fair Haven, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 7.

The replica will be at Red Bank's Marine Park on June 8, where visitors can board the ship from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Those interested in sailing on the Onrust can call Michael Humphreys at[masked]-1150. For more information, visit www.navesinkmaritime.com.

Boating Safety Certificate course

We have had inquires about where members can take the NJ Boating Safety Course. Here is information about one being offered by the Monmouth County Parks System.

Receive the New Jersey State Police Certificate which is required for all power watercraft operators (this includes sailboats with a motor - SEAS requires that all SEAS skippers have this certificate). Taught in a relaxed and comfortable environment, certified instructors will cover general information about boats and maintenance, navigation rules and regulations, and state-specific laws. You will feel confident as you learn about boating safety, preparing for an enjoyable outing, and what to do in the event of an emergency. Taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 16-07. Please bring lunch and snacks.

2014 SEAS MONMOUTH MEERWALD SAIL

The annual Sunset Sail aboard New Jersey's own tall ship, the A.J. Meerwald will take place on

Saturday, June 28th from 6:00 - 8:30 PM, at Liberty State Park. As always, the fun filled day will include an afternoon potluck picnic at the park until boarding time at 5:30 PM. Then at 6:00 the Meerwald with its SEAS "crew" will embark on a scenic sail of the Hudson River enjoying a different view of the proud, sunset-lit skyline of New York City.

The Meerwald, which is 115 ft long, can carry as many as 42 passengers. Seats are $35 each. In the past, the seats have sold out very quickly, so you should plan to purchase yours as soon as possible.

Purchase details:

1. Cash or checks will be accepted either by mail (now), or in person at the SEAS general meeting. Make checks payable to "SEAS Monmouth" and write "Meerwald 2014" in the memo. Mail checks to:

Elisabeth Burnett 1223 Almshouse Rd. Warminster, PA 18974

2. No reservations will be accepted. Seats are purchase-only.

3. Seats can only be purchased by SEAS members with current memberships, although the seats can be used by non-members. In order to spread the limited number of seats among as many SEAS members as possible, no more than four seats can be purchased by any SEAS member or any SEAS couple.

4. Bookings are strictly first-come, first-served. Mail-in bookings (with checks) will be given as much priority as in-person purchases at the meeting. If a check is sent to Elisabeth, please notify her by email ([masked]) so she will expect it. After the meeting, tickets will continue to be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

5. When the 42 passenger limit is reached, people who sent in payments will be automatically placed on a waiting list. Any check which is ultimately not used as payment (because no seats opened up) will be destroyed, and the writer will be notified (no checks will be returned by mail). If cash was paid, however, a refund check will be sent.

For more information, contact Elisabeth at

[masked] or[masked]-0050. More detailed information, including maps, will be emailed to booked passengers prior to the cruise.
