The Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is a Portland park maintained by a group of wonderful volunteers who have created a truly beautiful venue for any nature photographer. The garden is filled with rhododendrons of all varieties, magnolia trees, flowers, water features and water fowl. There are many walking paths and bridges. Also a very large lake. The park is both family and pet friendly. Photographers are welcome. The park sits in a bowl so I have chosen to go a little later in the morning as to allow the light to filter through. If there is bright sunshine be prepared for some contrasty light. This is why you've been practicing HDR right? Lets hope for light overcast. This is a shooting event which means I'll be shooting but am always happy to answer questions.

Be sure to bring a:

Camera

Tripod

Flash or other light modifiers

Lenses of choice from Wide Angle to extreme Telephoto(water fowl) and Macro

A $4.00 admission fee. Parking is free.

If it is cool be sure to layer. You might want to bring munchies and water, there is no snack stand.

Where we will meet: We will meet and carpool from the Starbucks parking area at Kiezer Station at 9:00 AM sharp. For those wanting to meet us at the garden please follow the directions below and expect us to be there around 10:00 AM. Look for us in the garden, it should not be hard to locate us. My Cell is [masked].

In case of heavy rain this event will be canceled.

Where it is: SE 28th Ave & SE Woodstock Blvd Portland OR

How to get there: Tried both Google maps and Mapquest and there directions are confusing at best. So use your GPS or follow the directions below.

Please read these before you leave.

Take I-5 N to I-205 N

From I-205 N Take Exit 17 Foster Rd

Take a Left (west) on Foster Rd

Go to SE 82nd Ave(Hwy 213) Take Left

Go to SE Woodstock Blvd. Take Right

Follow SE Woodstock past Reed College till it dead ends into SE 28th Ave.(a few miles)

Go Right on SE 28th Ave.

Within about 1/4 mile look for the garden entrance on your left. It is just opposite the west parking lot for Reed College which is used for overflow parking for the gardens.

Good idea Paul. Past that place and was wondering about it.

BTW: We ate at the "Laughing Planet Cafe" in Woodstock after the shoot and had a nice meal there. I think that once in a while, we could reconverge after a shoot at a place for a lunch, coffee or something to discuss the shoot.. optional, of course

I had a great time. I have been a couple of other times, but there was much more color this time than the last time I was there. Thanks Jim for organizing this shoot.

Unexpected! Will be going back there in a few weeks. It was larger than I expected, it was very clean, and well manicured. Tos of wildlife..

Now comes the task of putting my two time lapse videos together along with the panos and many HDR shots. 3 SD cards and 2 batteries later...this is going to take awhile LOL.

Matt I know that is the case with parking at Starbucks but thought we would meet there in case anyone needs coffee and then move the cars to another location and decide if anyone wants to carpool.

As we found out at the Wooden Shoe event, Starbucks and the surrounding businesses have 2 hour parking for customers only signs everywhere. May I suggest meeting up on the Target or Michaels lots instead?
