Monthly Critique Session

  • April 17 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This event has an automated waiting list, so if a member can't make it due to an unforeseen event, the next person on the waiting list will be added automatically.

This ongoing monthly event is for members who are wanting to open themselves up to growth through giving feedback to and receiving feedback from other members. This is not a competition in which one image is judged against others, but rather each image will be viewed and discussed on its own merits and flaws, so there are no winners or losers.

The first ten minutes of the event will be used to discuss the ground rules and specific dos and don'ts of critiquing and provide a couple of example critiques for you see how the process works.

Each participant of this event is required to submit one photo (no more, no less) in either digital or print format. Please email your image of no less than 1200 pixels wide to Rick at [masked] at at least one week prior to the meeting. If you are bringing a print to share, please email Shawn that you are bringing a print along with the print's dimensions. All images that will be digitally projected must be submitted at least 7 days before the event to allow time to prepare the presentation.

This is a great opportunity for you grow in your photography and for you to help others grow.

While critiquing is mostly subjective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it is also a based on technical aspects; exposure, composition, etc (which can still be subjective). The opportunity for growth is hearing the different interpretations of the image and suggestions other may have; concepts which you may not have thought of yourself. This true with your own image being critiqued, but is also equally true with other's images being critiqued as well.

The critiquing process is based on two factors:

  1. Openness - You must be willing to receive honest feedback
  2. Honesty - You must be willing to give honest feedback

We hope to see you there.

I enjoyed the critique and seeing all the pictures. I was sorry my picture got left out but hope it shows up next time. I thank you Steve Rice for the great little gift you brought us. I always learn a lot from the critiques and makes me think more about what I am doing.

It is disappointing when an image is lost. I have had it happen twice. I always learn something in these sessions. I may not always agree with what is being said, but find that the comments stick with me. It is good to have good honest feedback.

I apologize for any problems with the critique session. We had to go out of town on a family emergency so I uploaded the Powerpoint file to Steven on the fly. I just checked and for some reason it appears that two images didn't upload. I will make sure that they get included in next month's session and again, I apologize for the error. I know everyone makes an effort to attend in the hope of gaining valuable insight into their work and I understand the disappointment when something like this occurs.

Great images. I enjoyed looking and critiquing them. Thank you everyone for your feedback of my images and for participating. It's always fun when we have a wide variety of people's work to look at. And a big thanks to Steve Rice for the cool gift.

I encourage you to submit an image Erin!

I really enjoyed sitting in on that. I learned a lot and it was very interesting to hear a few different opinions and input on the same photo. I'm excited to submit one sometime.
