Regardless of your social goals we cannot afford to get deeper and deeper in debt. We need to keep theses issues in front of the public up to the November elections.
What do you suggest we do first? Perhaps a public awareness meeting at a public library? I think we need to define the scope of our efforts. For me, its important to track upcoming legislation, how our representatives vote, & how to contact representatives to hold them accountable. I think meetings should also focus on upcoming legislation & take necessary actions to change the course of legislation via petition, letters to Congress, radio shows, letters to the editor, rallys, etc.
Let me know if you want to start a group about keeping Matheson accountable. I'm certainly no public speaker and no expert, but I can get you the information on how he's voted on almost anything and we can compare his voting to Chaffetz's (love that guy) and Bishop's. I can also pull the voting record for Orrin Hatch (I just don't know about him anymore) and we can start keeping tabs on our new senator Mike Lee.
There is a "72 Hour Rule" that the new Congress might adopt that should give the public access to any bill that will be voted on 72 hours before it goes to the floor. I love this idea, because we can email our politicians before they vote. They can see the pros and cons from the public's view before they vote. There will be no more signing bills before they've read them. Encourage everyone you know to go to http://readthebill.org/ in order to sign the petition to make this 72 hour a reality.
I can't tell you how much I've come to dislike Matheson. I've become a member of Congress.org and get an email on a daily basis M-F on what is going on in the House, the Senate, and what the President has done that day. It also lets me know how our individual representatives have voted. I think the only I agree with Matheson on is stem cell research. I write letters to him probably about twice a month and am always disappointed with the responses he sends back.
