  • We'll be visiting Windansea Beach in La Jolla, California and focusing on including people in your landscape shots using models.

We'll be shooting the sunset at Windansea Beach and including a model, to learn the value of including people in your landscape photographs. Adding a person can help add a human connection to the scene, forcing viewers to imagine what it would be like to be there themselves. In this case, using a surfer helps to convey the personality of this popular surfing spot.

The neighborhood adjacent is called Windansea, after the beach. Named after an oceanfront hotel that burnt down in the late 1940s, the neighborhood is defined by the beachfront extending north of Palomar Avenue and south of Westbourne Street. It is located just North of Bird Rock.

We will be meeting in the parking lot at the corner of Bonair Street and Neptune Place and shooting well past sunset. This is when the most magnificent colors appear, but can only be seen by your camera using a long (20-30 second) exposure.

We welcome film or digital but suggest using digital if you are just starting out, preferably with manual shutter and aperture controls. A tripod is required to shoot at sunset, as the exposures can get as long as 30 seconds. We have one spare tripod available to use for $5 (email Nick beforehand).

Required: Tripod and camera with manual shutter control.
I will bring a reflector to bounce light onto the model.

Bring flashlights, lens cleaning cloths, tripods, cameras, and a smile.

Email or call us if you have any additional questions or need detail clarifications.
    See you soon.
