Organizers Mixer and Potluck

  • Jul 21, 2013 · 4:00 PM

(Note, this meetup is for current organizers only; I know that Meetup sends out emails asking everyone if they want to come and there isn't a way to limit that just to organizers.  Sorry!)  Thanks to the enthusiasm of our organizers, SDNAA has continued growing. When we last did an organizers' meeting a year and a half ago, we had over 800 members. Today we have over 1300 (and still growing) with over 90 organizers!

This is a gathering for all current assistant/event organizers to get to know each other if you don't already, and to discuss the group's current and future direction. This will be a great chance to share your ideas for the group and for future events - that's the most valuable part. I'll start off with a short presentation with current data on membership and activities, and then transition to: what kinds of activities are most successful? And most importantly, what does "success" look like for SDNAA?

Don't make dinner plans; DO bring something tasty to share. (If like me, you can't cook to save your a**, don't feel bad, store-bought is fine.)

Pedro has again been kind enough to offer to host us at his excellent home in Bonita. Prior to the event I will email the address to all yes-RSVPs.

Hope you can make it and thank you for making it all happen!

-Mike

Thanks for hosting (you too Pedro!) and putting together all the info. I'm all inspired again!

Dear Organizers: If we have an organizer or member(s) up for a worthwhile volunteer project, I want to float an idea... Our ranks are now large enough that we could have our own service directory, similar to what the LGBT community has. For example yesterday I put an APB out to the whole SDNAA group asking for graphic designers and got 7 helpful, thoughtful responses. We may have similar numbers of plumbers, landscapers, computer repair techs, real estate agents, lawyers, etc. For those times I need a service person but no personal referral, I would prefer to reach out to the secular community for that assistance. Another benefit is that a service directory would further foster the sense of community among us. It would be fantastic if some nice organized person made this happen! Just a thought for the organizers as I can't be there for the potluck to suggest in person.

    Best,
    Elaine

$5 a year is a bargain. Excess might provide the revenue needed to cover the expenses of Meetup, as well as the Google ads that someone in SDNAA pays for. This can all be very transparent by using the mechanism within Meetup to collect PayPal payments.

I'll take a look and work up costs. Thanks for the thoughts y'all.

whois.net/whois/sdna.org looks like it's just being cyber squatted. We could try to pick it up at renewal on 10/11/13

Do you want to take care of that Brendan? I took the SDNAA.org because the SDNA was not available, but I agree with what you're saying.

yeah I can set a reminder and see if I can snag it

Any chance of putting that power point on google docs or another file sharing service? (Since I was a lazy bum and didn't get down to bonita?)

my ride and I will be fashionably late as the onion bacon tarts are taking a smidge longer than planned

So bummed that I can't even come to this event to learn what I can do to help. I just don't get it. I've got time, desire, mad skillz, and I was a professional chef so at the very least I would bring something yummy. I guess God only knows why I'm not welcome because as a semi competent rational thinker I sure can't figure out the reason.

Tommy... I'm working on our Dusty Smith commercial now, and look forward to your help! If I know one thing for sure, this was NOT personal, and I think Mike might be new to using the email-sending-controls of Meetup. I'm sure he will want to avoid this kind of misstep in the future. It is awkward to be uninvited... perhaps a little more awkward than doing the uninviting. There is a way to filter emails so that only specific people get the invitation. This is different than creating a Meetup, however. It does seem that this event was intended specifically for experienced/current "organizers" with SDNAA. I'm expecting a "working" meeting... not just a social gathering. I hope I can count on your attendance at the Dusty Smith event, and if you are up to it... we can use some help that evening.

Tommy -- you will be so valuable to the group. Just suggest a meet-up you'd like to do, or contact me and we'll come up with something. This is just a glitch, not a personal comment -- Really!

I have a cousin visiting from Austrailia. So, I'm not sure if I can make it. I'm a definite 'it depends.'

    July 19, 2013

*Maybe* depends on the whims of a toddler.

Michael, just got the un-invite. That was weird. Initially I didn't accept because of the descriptor. Then I saw (or i thought i saw) comments discussing if it was a limited group. So sorry... have fun coming up with new ideas....

    1 · July 17, 2013

    • Michael C.

Hi Kay, as mentioned there's no way to send the invite just to organizers so everyone ends up getting the event notification. So, my apologies for this. (Anyone reading this, if there is a way to filter the invitation, please let me know!) I'll see you at another event soon!

      July 18, 2013

  • Tommy J

I just got an un-invite too. After I posted to the meetup asking if I was welcome and got an affirmative. I also had my post deleted asking if I could attend and they reply to it. Seems strange to me if they have not had a potluck in one and a half years. Guess I'm not needed. That's OK, I will watch the group instead...have fun coming up with new ideas....

    July 17, 2013

    • Michael C.

Hi Tommy, sorry about this - Meetup doesn't let me send an invite to just the organizers and on top of that, it then asks everyone to RSVP to the event. My apologies for this - I appreciate your enthuasiasm, we'll meet soon!
