Greasy brunch at Las Cuatro Milpas

Las Cuatro Milpas is a decades-old San Diego institution and something of a throwback to much simpler menus. No california burritos here - just your choice of beef, chicken or pork folded into a lard-fried crunchy taco or wrapped in one of their soft, savory homemade flour tortillas. Even the simple rice and beans bowl (order "chile con huevo") is sublime and satisfying. The tamales are HUGE and the rolled taco plate (served with sour cream in place of guacamole).

The line outside is famously long, and there's something of a soup nazi vibe to the cafeteria-style counter, but you should still ask if they have tortillas and or tamales to go - chances are you'll be denied, but if you're lucky you'll have something special to take home that is incomparable to any substitute. If you've never been here, you have no right to call yourself a San Diegan - and my confidential tacophile sources inform me that LCM will be closed before the year is over due to the property being sold. So let's get together and chow down before the charming family restaurant is replaced by ugly, overpriced condos that go unoccupied for years!

Vegetarians: sorry, but you'll want to skip this one. Unless you're one of those lardo-vegetarians...

I just found out that I have a class tomorrow morning that will prevent me from joining y'all until ~12 noon. I'm still planning on being there, but I'll be quite late.

This place has been around at least since the 1970's! As long as you are not requiring healthy PC food, this place is fantastic...you WILL need a siesta by the time you are done, and the hot sauce is a killer, so use in gram-size doses. The chorizo or red beans and rice, or the rolled tacos w/sour cream will turn you into a satiated and satisfied lump of useless flesh for a while, but you should recover, and will want to visit again! At 11:00 am,you can expect long lines. They are not open for dinners, nor on Sundays (very religious Catholic owners). I knew the original owners, a married couple who worked there everyday, including doing the cooking, cleaning, everything.

Matt: Are they REALLY closing after all these years, or relocating? What a loss of a cultural icon in San Diego if that is true. :(

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
