Re: [atheists-518] Germany imposes ban on Tom Cruise

Hey everyone,

First let me say, I think Tom Cruise is loopy, I think Scientology is even loopier (though no more or less than other religions out there).  That being said I don't agree with Germany's decision.

Cruise wants to make a movie.  He is not trying to overthrow the government.  He is a talented actor and for the most part I enjoy his movies.  The film itself sounds intriguing, and I for one will probably go out and see it.

Hi, I'm new to the group. I agree with the post below. I would say more people have died in the name of "god" (insert god of your choice here) than have died of the flu. If not more, I would say it is pretty close.

Personally I don't see any difference between Scientology and the other religions. I watched the complete slide show you referenced. Pick an established religion and you could make the same slide show as they have done Scientology. Personally I kind of like Scientology over the other religions because:
1) It doesn't make us humans the center of the universe. It has other planets and aliens in it.
2) Their history goes back more than six thousand years!
3) They have self improvement programs.

Sure Scientology has all the negative baggage the other religions have. It "kills" people in just the same ways. However it's newer and a major step in the right direction. Maybe the next major religion will embrace even more ideas. Say for instance evolution...

Here in the USA anybody who claims to have a religion is supposed to be tolerated and tax exempt. Even believing in green people from Mars or the healing power of cow dung probably qualifies. Germany has a more rational stand point. Below is a reference to the "Church of Scientology"

Subject: [atheists-518] Germany imposes ban on Tom Cruise

Every morning I read through my RSS list to see what's changed over the day and I found this posted by the BBC. I found it quite humoring. Following these lines of reasoning it's fun to second guess what the next logical step would be!

On another note, why can't we post to the forum. Something like this really belongs on a forum I think, rather than cluttering peoples in baskets...

Germany has banned the makers of Tom Cruise's new movie from filming at military sites in the country because the actor is a Scientologist.
The German defence ministry said Cruise has "publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult".
Scientology masquerades as a religion to make money, Germany said, but leaders of the church reject this.
Cruise's producing partner Paula Wagner said the star's own convictions had no relation to the film's content.
"Personal beliefs have absolutely no bearing on the movie's plot or themes," she said.
'Heroic and principled'
Scientology has been monitored in Germany in the belief that its activities are "directed against the free democratic order" in the country.
Its status there as a commercial enterprise has prompted repeated protests from the organisation.
Cruise will play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in Valkyrie, leader of the 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler using a bomb hidden in a briefcase, scheduled for release next year.
German defence ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer said that Germany's military "has a special interest in the serious and authentic portrayal of the events of July 20, 1944 and Stauffenberg's person".
Wagner said Cruise's portrayal in the film would be as a "heroic and principled figure", while "Germany is the only place we can truly do the story justice".
"We believe the film will go a long way toward reminding the world that even within the ranks of the German military, there was real resistance to the Nazi regime," she added.
Stauffenberg's son Berthold told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper earlier this week that he objected to Cruise taking the role because of his involvement with Scientology.
"He should keep his hands off my father," Mr von Stauffenberg said.
Mr Kammerbauer, meanwhile, said that official requests for filming in the country had yet to be received.
