Please join CleanTECH San Diego and the US Renewables Group for the CleanTECH Showcase on February 10, 4:00PM – 7:00PM at the La Jolla Marriott. This new quarterly series features leading members of the investment community and promising regional companies.
Investments in wind power projects and related technologies are leading all renewable investments. This program will explore the opportunities and challenges of the role of wind in powering the nation's economic recovery and in meeting renewable goals. Jim McDermott, Managing Partner of US Renewables Group, will discuss the wind market and strategies for buyers, sellers and new market entrants.
The keynote presentation by Jim McDermott of the US Renewables group will be followed by a panel discussion featuring regional wind developers and technology companies, including enEXco and Helix. US Renewables Group (USRG) is one of the largest investment firms focused exclusively on the renewable energy industry with $750 million of capital commitments.

He will be discussing the wind market and strategies for buyers, sellers and new market entrants. Mr. McDermott is a Managing Director based in Los Angeles and one of the firm's two Managing Partners. Mr. McDermott has operational control of the firm's day-to-day activities. Prior to forming USRG, Mr. McDermott started his career as a public power banker with First Boston's Municipal Finance Group in New York. While at First Boston, he worked with Southern California Public Power Authority, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Washington Public Power Supply System and several other West Coast municipal utilities and investor owned utilities.

Dr. Walker is Vice Chairman of the Board of enXco. He served as CEO from October 2002 until March 2005 and was subsequently responsible for management of the company’s portfolio of over $1 billion of operating wind projects. enXco is a leading developer, owner and operator of wind projects and is wholly owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles. Dr. Walker has over 30 years experience in energy in public and private entities, including MCR Geothermal and Edison Mission Energy. He pioneered wind project development in Greece, Turkey and Mexico. After serving in the Office of Management and Budget in the Nixon and Ford Administrations, he spent 8 years at the California Energy Commission in the Jerry Brown administrations, serving as Executive Director, Commissioner and Vice Chairman. Dr. Walker has been on the Board of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) since May, 2005 and is Past President of AWEA. He was named “Industry Person of the Year” at AWEA’s national convention in June 2007. He has a BA in Physics from Princeton University and a Doctorate from Harvard Business School. Dr. Walker resides in Athens, Greece and Carlsbad, California, with his wife, Anastasia, andhas five grown children.
Ian Gardner, CEO Helix
Mr. Gardner holds a B.S. in Pre-Med from Davidson College in North Carolina and an MBA with a focus on technology and entrepreneurial studies from The Anderson School at UCLA. Ian's early career included extensive international private power work on Duke Energy's development team, acquiring and building large scale generation and distribution projects in Latin America, Australia, China and Southeast Asia. Subsequently Ian left Charlotte and headed West, where he was the lead analyst for the Boston Consulting Group's International Energy and Utilities practice group headquartered in San Francisco. For the next two years Ian lived and worked in Latin America, Europe and Australia on projects in the electric and natural gas industries. After completing his MBA from UCLA Ian's focus shifted to technology and he led several startups in the broadband media and wireless spaces raising over $10MM in funding. Two years of business planning and development work with The Esalen Institute in Big Sur rounded out a strong business background with broad exposure to sustainable technologies and construction as well the human development sector.
