DESIGN - WORDPRESS Series!!!

NEW UPDATE to Class Schedule:

In our first class, I think I will try to set you up on WAMP or MAMP ( a local server environment for you to work from)

If you will be following along on your personal laptop, please take the time to download:

Mac - MAMP for Macs (do not do the pro version- you only need the standard free version) http://www.mamp.info/en/downloads/index.html You will also need to download Sequel Pro- http://www.sequelpro.com/download if you are using a MAC.

Windows - WAMP if you are on a PC http://www.wampserver.com/en/.

Just follow all the prompts for the default install. Don't worry about figuring it out, we will talk about it in class. :-)

We most likely will not have access to internet in class, so do this before you get to class. If you do not have a laptop, no worries. Just bring a note book to jot down some notes. :

UPDATE!!

First class date will be Wed Feb 13th!

Dates: If all goes as planned, we will have the following classes every other wed to follow. Once I can confirm these dates, I will post them.

Materials: Many people have asked what you will need for the meet up. Here is what I recommend:

- A laptop (if possible) So that you can follow along

- A pad and pen for notes

- A code editor if you plan to follow along

- Eventually you will need to download MAMP and MYSQL both free (but the install is a bit tricky so wait and download that after I have given you instructions during the class)

You can download a free one at http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/download.html

Cost: $20 for the series (4 classes-possibly 5 if need be) or $10 a class (if you want to pick and choose your classes)

Usually all of our meet ups are free. However, there will be a slight charge for this series. This series will require a lot of prep work and I am trying to help cover the annual dues for MeetUp so I can continue providing speakers and meet ups for the group. Hope you understand :-)

Classes: The class tentatively is:

1st class- Breaking down your art and preparing it for coding and into to HTML.

2nd class- Building the site using HTML, using an FTP and testing the site - intro to CSS if there is time

3rd class- Styling your site with CSS, why we use CSS and things to consider when designing for multiple browsers.

4th class- The Migration- installing MAMP, MYSQL, and Wordpress on your laptop. Understanding the structure of a WP site verses a Static HTML site.

(possible 5th class) Continuing with WP and the migration process and Q & A.

These classes will move very fast and you will have a lot of information to take in with every class in order to cover everything. I will do my best to cover all questions and make sure you all have a working example to reference in the future when building your next site.

If anyone has any other questions, feel free to contact me via email and I would be happy to answer!

Look forward to seeing everyone.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Time to start on those New Years resolutions.

How about learning more about HTML, CSS and Wordpress!

I would like to propose a class series of meet-ups (4-5) total where we will build out a website starting from scratch (design) and then convert the design to HTML and CSS and follow up by converting your the site to Wordpress.

I wanted to get an idea from you guys on how many would be interested in a class series like this. It takes a lot of prep work so I just want to make sure I have at least 10 people interested to move forward.

If you are interested, please let me know. Also let me know if Tuesdays or Weds work best for people. I would love to accommodate everyone but with so many different schedules it will come down to majority rule and our sponsors availability of the room.

Look forward to seeing everyone again soon.

Thank you for taking the time to put all of this together, Britt...it is so appreciated and very helpful! It was a great presentation of the framework of beginning a site build. I'm going to brush up on my HTML/CSS on my own to supplement. Looking forward to the next classes!

A little advanced for some, too easy for others but you're never going to please anyone. It's a heavy topic with A LOT of information so I appreciate that we are even having it!

I am working with Lynda.com to get us access to some of there best videos during this series for a reduced rate if people are interested. We will see if they come through. If so they will be a great resource to accompany your learning.

Hello Britt, I'm intested and if you can cover the basic qtns. Do we need to bring a specific equipment: Ipad, Notebook. Do we need to install and software ahead of tiime (Full or demo trail version). Thank you again for your contribution to eager minds wanting to learn.

If you have a laptop, I would suggest bring it. Otherwise, just something to take notes with. Eventually, you will need to download a free version of MAMP and MySQL but not for the first few classes. It is a bit tricky to install and I will go over that in detail during that class. You will need a code editor if you don't already have one. I will be using dreamweaver, but there are many free ones you can download online that will work. I recommend TextWrangler.

I'm interested. Do i need a laptop to attend?

    January 25, 2013

    • Brittany D.

No, but it would be helpful to follow along. I will put everything up on the overhead. If you don't bring a laptop I would suggest a notepad and pen to take notes. :-)
