CANCELLED! - Lake Hodges Advanced Beginner Night Ride

Hey all – My first ride went well last night so let’s do it again.  On feedback from a couple of members, this week’s ride is on Thursday and will start a little later.  Beginning riders are welcome and encouraged and I will adjust the speed, distance and route as necessary.

The speed will be that of the slowest rider - which likely could be me :)  If the group is large enough, I will either split the group or add a sweeper but no one will be left behind.

The distance is planned to be around 13 miles.  Tonight’s ride will be to the base of Raptor Ridge via the Highland Valley singletrack and return via the Mule Hill / San Pasqual trail.  From there we can ride further depending on the time and input from the group.

The route will start at the Sunset Dr. trailhead and ride the bike/foot path to the footbridge.  At the footbridge we will cross to the South side of Lake Hodges and ride the bike path on the North side of Pomerado Rd. to Highland Valley Rd. and the trailhead near the intersection.  At the end of the trail there will be about a mile or so of riding on paved road (Highland Valley Rd).  We will then connect to the Mule Hill / San Pasqual trail and ride East to the base of Raptor Ridge.  We will turnaround there and return to the parking lot via the Mule Hill / San Pasqual trail on the North side of the San Dieguito River valley past the strawberry fields. If the group, consensus is to ride further, we can continue riding to the Del Dios Community Park via the usual trails on the North side of Lake Hodges and return.

As always, bring your bike in good working condition, sufficient water, sufficient nutrition and a required helmet.  For this ride, a taillight is also recommended for the paved portion of the route though the traffic is generally minimal there.

If the response is good, I hope to make this a regular, perhaps weekly event.  The ride is designed as an option to the Los Penasquitos Canyon rides and for those who live further up in North County,

I'm interested in doing a night ride, but I have no equipment. Do you recommend anything specifically , or should I just go to the bike shop?

I'm sorry Omar - I tired to be keep everyone informed as well as I could. I did want to wait as late as possible to make the decision but did in fact make it at around 3:00. So I hope you had a good ride - it looked like it cleared up a bit so was probably very nice.

    Tonight's ride is hereby CANCELLED!

Sorry for the late notice but in light of the weather and all things considered, I believe it is the prudent decision to cancel tonight's ride. I was going to cancel at noon then it cleared up a little, then I went to a meeting at 1:00 and it started pouring, then I get ready to write this and the sun come out. Go figure. Regardless, it's been raining on and off here for most of the day. In addition, I know traffic will be horrid as well. Finally, though I would think the trails may be rideable, I don't want to damage them either.

There will be other days and rides. I will likely reschedule for next Thursday.

    Thank you for your patience.

8:00 AM update - It's raining lightly here in Escondido. The NOAA forecast for precipitation has increased to 90% today and 80% tonight with possible thunderstorms between 10:00 AM and 10:00 PM. So things don't look good for tonight's ride. I plan to wait until around noon to see if the rain gets heavier as expected and will make a decision no later than 3:00.

Jeff is right - it looks like a cold front coming our way. Right now the forecast is 70% chance of rain Thursday day and 50% cnance Thursday night. So let's keep an eye on things and see what develops. Rain of course will cancel but I may not make the call until late afternoon on Thursday. But please check here prior to making the drive up.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
