Lake Hodges Advanced Beginner Night Ride

Take 2 - as last week's ride was cancelled due to weather:

Hey all – My first ride went well so let’s do it again.  On feedback from a couple of members, this week’s ride is on Thursday and will start a little later.  Beginning riders are welcome and encouraged and I will adjust the speed, distance and route as necessary.

The speed will be that of the slowest rider - which likely could be me :)  If the group is large enough, I will either split the group or add a sweeper but no one will be left behind.

The distance is planned to be around 13 miles.  Tonight’s ride will be to the base of Raptor Ridge via the Highland Valley singletrack and return via the Mule Hill / San Pasqual trail.  From there we can ride further depending on the time and input from the group.

The route will start at the Sunset Dr. trailhead and ride the bike/foot path to the footbridge.  At the footbridge we will cross to the South side of Lake Hodges and ride the bike path on the North/East side of Pomerado Rd. to Highland Valley Rd. and the trailhead near the intersection.  At the end of the trail there will be about a mile or so of riding on paved road (Highland Valley Rd).  Traffic is generally very light on this road but bring a taillight if you have one.  We will then connect to the Mule Hill / San Pasqual trail and ride East to the base of Raptor Ridge.  We will turnaround there and return to the parking lot via the Mule Hill / San Pasqual trail on the North side of the San Dieguito River valley past the strawberry fields. If the group, consensus is to ride further, we can continue riding to the Del Dios Community Park via the usual trails on the North side of Lake Hodges and return.

As always, have your bike in good working condition, sufficient water, sufficient nutrition and a required helmet.  For this ride, a taillight is also recommended for the paved portion of the route though generally there if very little traffic.

If the response is good, I hope to make this a regular, perhaps weekly event.  The ride is designed as an option to the Los Penasquitos Canyon rides and for those who live further up in North County,

Great 20 minute ride, maybe I'll make it out another time and have my derailleur hanger last a little longer.

It sounds like you got back ok. It turned out to be a nice ride so sorry about the mishap. I hope it was a relatively easy reapair - it sure looked bad out on the trail. And I hope to see you again soon.

Thanks for hosting! My hanger snapped, so assuming I can find a new one and the derailleur's not bent it should be pretty easy. Cheers

Thank you all for coming out to ride last night. Other than a couple of broken chains, one repaired and one unrepairable, I though it went well and hope you did too. For me, it was my 4th night ride and the best so far. After we hit the parking lot after the first loop, 5 of us rode to Hernandez Hideaway and back for a total of 24 miles. The icing on the cake, for me, was that as we got close to the parking lot after the second loop we saw a very large owl fly in front of us and then saw him again perched in a tree as we rode by. Thanks again everyone, I hope to see you guys again - maybe in the daytime next time.

I'm going to skip next week but hopefully will do something the following week. Get that Lexus fixed ASAP. Are you riding Sunday?

Great ride, especially the extra credit portion. I didn't sign up for the bike repair course but was glad I attended.
