RE: [mountainbikes-28] New Meeting: Palm Canyon Spring Fling

Mike,

This looks like a great ride and I'm totally into it, although I don't really consider myself an advanced rider.  You're pretty familiar with my skills and fitness.  Do you think that I could do this ride without holding the rest of the group up?

Announcing a new meeting for San Diego Mountain Biking Meetup Group!

What: Palm Canyon Spring Fling

When: Sunday, March 9, 7:00 AM

Where: (A location for this meeting hasn't been chosen yet)

Who should come: The long Haul Adventure types

Why: DUH!

Meeting Description: I am going to post this for Sunday March 9th. I can?t do Saturday because of baseball schedule. So go to church Saturday nite and ride on Sunday, God doesn?t care if you go Saturday nite or Sunday morning.

Let me be perfectly clear on this just in case you had any doubts to my earlier post. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER RIDE! Advanced riders only. I?m not a hater by any means, I just need you to understand that this is not an easy ride and should only be attempted by people who are in excellent shape and can handle long rides. There are NO bailout options here.

Okay now for the fun stuff:
We will meet at a spot in Escondido just off the 15 and 78. There is a Starbucks off of auto park way (1282 auto park way) so we can all meet up there and juice up. We will meet at 0500. Then drive to Cathedral City and drop off shuttle vehicles, shuttle vehicles will be decided when we meet at Starbucks. Then we drive back to the top and let the party begin.

Now I may decide to head up to Pinyon Flats Camp ground the nite before and camp out? That all depends on if I can score some cool points with the wife between now and then? If I head up the nite before you all can join me if you want? The meet up point will remain the same for those coming up Sunday morning. If I camp out we will have one extra option. Once everyone gathers up in Escondildo you can all stop at Pinyon Flats CG and drop off your bikes and gear before we head down to drop off vehicles. This is a better option as it will not require the whole group to make the trip all the way down to CC. Half the group will be able to hang at the campsite and warm themselves by the fire and have a cup of joe while a few people head down and drop off shuttle vehicles. If I can get several more people to camp out Saturday nite then we can stage the vehicles ahead of time. Those coming up Sunday morn won?t even have to wait for the shuttles to get situated and we can ride on time.

So bring a chair to sit in if you plan on sitting at the fire. It will be friggin cold at sun up. If everyone shows up on time in Escondildo then we can be back up to the top trailhead after dropping off vehicles (unless we pre-stage the nite before?) at a good time around 0800? Well that?s the plan but itchy and scratchy will always show up late and keep us delayed by an hour.

STANS! SLIME TUBES! OR SLIME LINERS (Teflon strips)! YOU BETTER HAVE ONE OR THE OTHER. I am anticipating a large group of at least a dozen riders maybe more and the last thing we need is 15 friggin flats every 4 miles! It happens every single time, someone ignores the warnings and we spend hours hanging out working on our tans and sucking down way to much fluid and then ding dong knuckle draggers are out of water, out of tubes, and just want the easiest way down and then 98 percent of the group just wants to bail on all the good stuff at the end. I WILL NOT BE BAILING?.I will be doing Hahn BV and ALL the Singletrack leading into the GT?s. If you decide to bail when we get to Mike?s Desert Oasis you are on your own, don?t worry you won?t be alone?it NEVER fails, they start dropping like fly?s at this point. From there it is a fire road back into town.

WATER! BRING TWO BLADDERS! Or you better have a 100 oz bladder and a couple of 32oz Gatorades. If you drink all your water and start foaming at the mouth I will only make it worse for you. Ask my brother how I made him and his stoopidid buddy pay the price for being morons in an Adventure race we did in New England. His buddy still hates my guts and wants to fight me every time he see?s me and that was 7 years ago and my brother still refuses to race with me.

TUBES?Bring extra tubes, even if you are running tubeless with Stan?s or slimetubes. I am running Stan?s and though I have yet to have any problems myself with Stans on this ride (others have) I will still have 3 or 4 tubes myself. Before the days of tubeless I went through 5 tubes on one ride and then had to patch a couple. My buddy Gordo went through 5 tubes and patched 4 on our last ride and he also had his rear derailleur rip off. Not fun doing this as a single speed. I had a bad crash there 4 years ago and had to single speed it out with just my granny gear and one brake and a bent rim?THAT DAY SUCKED ASS!!!! So if your bike uses replaceable rear derailleur hangers you might want to think about buying a spare one and putting it in your pack.

This takes planning so I will keep you all updated in the message section. I am really not an ass, I just don?t want to baby-sit on this ride. We will have probably a dozen bikers or more so it will be fun and we will have a good time and we will have adventures and misadventures. This one of the best rides in California and you should bring a camera. This scenery is stunning, especially this time of year!
