Photography Movie Night - "Finding Vivian Maier" - La Jolla Village Cinema

Who is Vivian Maier?

Now considered one of the 20th century's greatest street photographers, Vivian Maier was a loner who worked as a nanny most of her life, and shot photos constantly everywhere she went, taking over 100,000 photographs that went unseen during her lifetime.

Amateur historian John Maloof bought the contents of her storage locker by chance at an auction, and soon became obsessed with trying to learn more about the mysterious recluse. The first trace he was able to find of her was her recent obituary. Since then Maloof has organized many acclaimed exhibits of her work, and is crusading to put this prolific photographer into the history books.

In Finding Vivian Maier, Maloof and co-director Charlie Siskel's captivating documentary, Maier's strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.

    Hello Dan,

Thank you for the great MeetUp. It was fun to have the three groups together for dinner and the movie. Most of the images shown had very good depth and deep realism. Let us try another photography movie some other time again.

If by chance you are at the ArtWalk, Little Italy next weekend, stop by and say hello. I will be in Booth 357 (part of the Spanish Village Art Center).

    Be well,
    Jeffrey

The movie made me want to dig deeper, and I ordered both of the published collections of her work, on Amazon.

Terrific and highly recommended documentary movie on Vivian Maier. She was a mysterious figure who created some amazing images on the street when she wasn't being a hired nanny to other people's children. A must-see for any true fan of classic street photography.

UPDATE: We will be meeting in front of Elijah's Restaurant (right next to the theater) at 5:30pm for those that want to dine there before the movie. We will be getting discounted tickets from Jeffrey Brian there ($9 adults/8:50 seniors), so DON'T buy in advance. Those that are only coming for the movie, please arrive at 6:30 so we can get all the tickets coordinated with Jeffrey and socialize a bit before heading in. I will try to remember to wear my red MEETUP t-shirt so you can spot me. Also, if you cannot make it, you must change your rsvp as soon as possible, as we need a proper head count for tickets. Also, for those that have Entertainment 2014 books, there is a coupon for Elijah's in there that can be used for dinner. I will see you all there at 5:30!

I had read about Vivian Maier passing in the obituary section of the New York Times back in 2009 and thought she was a lost jewel of the medium!! She was as great as any of her female contemporaries for sure!

    April 17, 2014

  • sandi m.

    What is the ticket price?

    April 16, 2014

    • Dan C.

I think we will be able to get a group rate, though I'm not sure what the price will be. Figure $10 roughly.
