Scripps Birch Aquarium

Scripps Birch Aquarium

UPDATE 10/16/2012~ It isn't too late to sign up for Scripps Birch Aquarium. Come join us this Saturday the 20th at 1pm; because, I've received concrete confirmation from 50 folks who said he/she will be attending for sure as a group at 1pm on the 20th. This event has been posted to 4 other Meetup.com groups, so as long as everyone does show up we will have enough to go in as a group on the 20th at the following discounted prices:
Adults $9.50
Seniors with valid I.D. (60+) $8.50
Student with valid I.D. $7.50

The Birch Aquarium brings to life the exciting discoveries of world-renowned, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world. Research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans and earth.

Enter the world of sharks, seahorses, living coral reefs and more, and discover a stunning variety of Pacific marine life in more than 60 habitats. Interact with exhibits that showcase the cutting-edge discoveries of Scripps Oceanography explorers through hands-on displays and multimedia.

Tide Pool Feeding: Aquarists feed the fishes and invertebrates in the live animal displays. Watch as sharks cruise by eyeing their food, or as lobsters emerge from their rocky hiding places. When it's feeding time, the habitat comes to life and animal behaviors are best observed. Opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the wonders of the ocean world.

Parking/Handicap Access: Birch Aquarium offers 3-hour courtesy parking. The aquarium is wheelchair accessible and wheelchairs are available for visitors' use. Handicapped parking is located in the traffic circle at the front of the aquarium.

Photography: Visitors are encouraged to take personal photos of any display. Flash photography is allowed inside the aquarium, except where noted. What to bring to Birch Aquarium: you will need the fastest lens(es) you have, preferably a fixed (prime) lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or greater. Lenses with focal lengths like 28mm, 50mm or 85mm work very well. Fast medium zooms such as 24-70mm f/2.8 also work. Wear dark clothing as light clothing will show your reflection. Photographers wanting to use tripods should check in with Visitor Services to determine the crowd level. Please note that visitors may be photographed or videotaped by aquarium staff for professional use, or by the media covering aquarium news. Entry into the aquarium grants permission for use of these images.

I would post them if I knew how to open a new album. Sheila can you open an album for the “Birch Aquarium Photo Shoo”, or tell me how to do it.

Wonderful turnout around 1:15 about 37 showed up, but the office was ok with letting everyone go in as long as I waited for latecomers. By 2:30 10 more had arrived, so all in all we were only short by 3 for the group rate, but the office was good about accepting 47 folks for group rate. Made it in time to photograph the Sea Dragons as I had planned to do after waiting for a total count of 50. WHEW!
