Alternate Eclipse shooting sites INFO

The SDAA (San Diego Astronomy Association will be hosting two public “star party” venues for the eclipse.

- Sycamore Canyon Reserve ( near Poway off of S67 / Scripps Poway Parkway)

- Tierra Del Sol (SDAA dark site, past Campo near Boulevard, CA edge of high desert before Anza Borrego, about 1.5 hours East

Depending on how thick (tall) the marine layer is the Sycamore Canyon site could be affected as well as the coast.
Obviously the higher you go the better. There may be sites on Mt. Laguna or Palomar Mtn. that give you a clear shot to the coast but both would require a “road trip” as does the SDAA Tierra del Sol site.

The Clear Sky Clock site is a pretty good indicator of what your chances are. We astronomers use it very frequently.

I spoke to an SDAA board member and in the case of Sycamore Canyon the rangers may or may not allow you to drive past the immediate off S67 parking into the reserve down to the large parking lot (normally they don’t in the evening unless you have red lights and are setting up astronomy gear). However since this is a day time event …they may…*No promises - not confirmed*.

Yesterday the sun was visible above the marine layer from Scripps Poway Prkwy 3/4's the way up to S67. Today at 2:00pm the marine layer was still solid just past I-5 however there was zero wind so no movement going out to sea. So no guarantees. I am going to the SDAA Sycamore Canyon site. Should be very nice and easy. I will be there around 4:00pm'ish. I have my filter(s) mounted between two glass clear filter frames UV so the mylar is not exposed. If I see you I can show you how to do it.
