Septeto Nacional (National Septet) has played an important role in Cuba’s music for more than seven decades. Pioneers of Son, a rhythmic blend of African and Cuban music that evolved into Salsa, the Mambo, and Latin jazz, the group was the first Son band to incorporate trumpet as a lead instrument. The group first formed in 1927 and, despite disbanding in 1937 and 1940, has played consistently since 1959.
