Bonus event: Dome Theater- DomeFest 2012

Note: We will be attending this event instead of our usual 3rd-Wednesday meeting at Scripps.

For several years the University of New Mexico and the Albuquerque Arts Lab have presented the Domefest film festival. Domefest is both a competition and a celebration of a new media: 'Full Dome'. At the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center, the Heikoff Dome Theater features four SONY SRXT-420 digital projectors, a giant nano-seam dome 76 feet in diameter and tilted at 25 degrees, with raked seats – all designed to immerse the audience in the image.

This screening is aimed at familiarizing local university professors and students with this relatively new media. Some of them are already working on utilizing the theaters capabilities for creating immersive environments for their own projects, which may be considered for presentation here in the future. See domefest.org or http://vimeo.com/45854057 for an idea of what you will see, (although, of course, the work has a much greater impact when seen within the dome).

6 pm:
Social half-hour.

630 pm:
They will introduce us to the medium and its uses in the creative arts and in science visualization.

645 pm:
Screening of Domefest 2012.

8 pm in the lobby:
We'll be giving away 4 passes to shows at the Reuben H. Fleet IMAX Theater Saturday October 26 (2 pairs; including 'Flight of the Butterflies' and 'Born to Be wild'):

The event was impressive. Yet there are many opportunities for beter content! Just like CGI twenty+ years ago, people are enamored by the technology instead of focusing on story, concept, and appeal. I saw far too much abstract visuals! I will push my students to create for this medium and offer some content to John. By the way, l would like to offer my school's render farm to any Maya or Max users.

We need more objective comments like these! Thanks! Yes, it definitely is a medium worth exploring, creatively and critically.

I could not agree more! That is one of the main reasons for this event, to inspire people to create compelling content. Stories and characters are what really grab people. Please come and see some of the material we have already played such as Tales of the Maya Skies, Cosmic Collisions. Domefest is a showcase for Fulldome content creators so perhaps it is not the best first impression. Since the medium came from the planetarium world and that is where the majority of the facilities are located there is a lot of reliance on astronomy related topics. I believe it is poised to break out and receive a wider audience.

Congratulations to the Winners of our IMAX Theater giveaway! 'Flight of the Butterflies' goes to Jason Katsoff. And 'Born to be Wild' goes to John and Barbara McDonald! Please meet our Chapter Secretary, Adam Gardner, sometime this evening to receive a pair of passes each.
