Snorkeling With Leopard Sharks, Guitarfish, Bat Rays And Friends

La Jolla shores is a great spot to see many species without needing to get into deep water. Many of the leopard sharks, guitarfish and rays live in water that comes up to your waist, not a lot of swimming required. So come enjoy these balmy summer days with aquatic friends new and old. We will meet on the beach side of the Marine room restaurant (southernmost point of La Jolla Shores beach) at 5:30. I suggest park on the residential street near the marine room and walk through the "secret" alley to the direct left of the marine room to get to the beach to meet us. Bring your swim gear/snorkeling mask and or goggles etc. Water is over 70 degrees so you don't need a wetsuit!

If you happen to be a few minutes late, just plop in the water and find us we will not be far. We will start punctually at 5:30 to catch the last of the good light!

Bring minimal gear because whatever we don't bring into the water, we place on the ledge of the Marine Room's windows and there isn't a lot of space.
Hoping it is a nice clear day and great visibility! Be prepared for sting rays as we get in so we'll do the sting ray shuffle.

Amber, sorry I missed you, got there a little late. Geoff saw you but didn't get a chance to say hi. I took my 16 year old daughter Erin, too. Met several others and we all had a great time! Beautiful day, warm water...saw leopard sharks and rays and anchovies(??)... Thanks :)

    Is anyone bringing their fins?

FYI everybody, I am fine after stingray sting. A little bit of incredibly intense pain but after soaking in hot water, the worst is over. Other than that, it was a great time with rays, sharks, anchovy and a jellyfish. Let's do it again, soon!

I can't believe that happened but then, I can they were everywhere!! Thanks for answering everyone's questions too, as I can't access meetup at work :)

    July 23, 2014

    • James W

There are some places down at the shores on avenida de la playa. Idk the specifics or when they close.

Ok so I am used to snorkel on a tropical island without fins. What should I bring today?

    July 23, 2014

    • James W

Mask, snorkel, fins if ya want them, a bathing suit and a towel should do ya. Bottle of water for after is nice. That is all I can think of. Oh underwater camera if you have one.

Does anyone recommend a spring or full suit for the temperature?

    July 22, 2014

    • Derrick W.

I swam to the 1/4 mile buoy without a suit a few years ago so I am going without one. Don't have a suit anyway, if it gets too cold I will turn in.

The reports say the water is 70 degrees. With the heat of the day, you should be fine without one. If you have a rash guard, that may help, but I think it will be quite refreshing.
