San Miguel Mtn Full Moon Hike via the Old Iron Bridge and the Sweetwater River

Have you wanted to climb San Miguel Mountain (the one between Spring Valley and Eastlake sprouting all the TV antenas) but weren't sure of the route (or the legality)? Here's your chance. We'll meet at the Old Iron Bridge off of Campo Rd (across from the Edwards and new YMCA, Rancho SD) at 2:45p and start hiking by 3:00p.

We'll start off along a very scenic stretch of the Sweetwater River. Even though civilization is just over the ridge, you feel like you are in the backcountry. The willows should be starting to change, adding some color to the trek. Expect birds galore in the small ponds that we'll pass. We'll then start climbing, hitting the summit of San Miguel around sunset at 6:35pm (depending on the group, we may overshoot or undershoot).

Assuming Mother Nature cooperates, we'll have spectacular views of the Sweetwater Reservoir, Downtown, Coronado and the Bay, and on into Mexico and the Coronado Islands.

We'll hang out until the moon is up and bright (though moonrise is 6:14p, twilight lasts until 7:01p), so bring some food and libation to share at the peak. We'll head back via the utility road, so the return trip is quick and easy. I'm guessing we'll be back to the cars by 8:30p. Optional visit to Hooley's Irish Pub http://www.hooleys.com/home.html

I came up with nearly 14 miles this time, and my body agrees. A challenging hike but we were rewarded with spectacular views from the summit. Good group of people--thanks for coming!
