I would anticipate it'd be wise to have a blanket, and expect a little noise from AMTRAK and Coast Highway/Cedros Ave traffic. As with Cinema Under the Stars, "in a lot of words ATMOSPHERE - it's outside people, c'mon! See you here!"

Great location, great movie, great fun.
However: So the movie fit to the location and the audience fit to the movie ..... I mean if someone shows a comic wine movie in a winery with easy access to wine - guess what - they will be bound to attract winos. I think that's a given. I just tried to ignore them as much as possible.
For the new people: As this movie group mainly meets in regular movie theatres of course there the audience is usually very quiet and well behaved. See y'all next time.

Thank you Barbara! I'm indeed grateful for your take on the evening at the winery.

It might also be a good idea for the host to check out a new venue before arranging a meet-up there. In other meet-ups we've attended, the host does some homework beforehand so we know what to expect. Also, it's been our experience that the host arrives extra early to enable him/er to greet people as they arrive. This attention to detail makes it a welcoming experience.

    Hello,
I too left early since it was already too crowded by the time I arrived.
    BUT...
I would like to add that this event was not at all representative of the usual meetups of this group.
Stephen has always been an excellent host, and has probably been one of the most active people here. I have always enjoyed watching films with him.
It is always good to try out new locations, and maybe in this particular instance it did not work out as hoped...
But to take this one event as representative of the group in general is being extremely unfair to the organisers.

    cheers,
    sid

This meeting was not representative of the events for this Meet-up Group. I agree that the venue was less than desirable due to comments already made, and I too left early. However, just as one should never judge a book by its cover, please do not judge the group based on this 1 very non-representative activity. Generally, we see interesting foreign or Indie movies and then meet afterward at a local restaurant for a discussion. Hope to see Mac & Sue as well as Brynn at another activity in the future.

With the poor quality acoustics, the nicotine, & the obnoxiously rowdy crowd that it attracts, no matter how interesting the film may be, neither of us would risk attending another event at that venue.
Kim, I saw the same obnoxious woman you're referring to. Am surprised that you refer to her as a lady. She is anything but.

Thank you Kim for the kind sentiment. Brynn and Mac & Sue, thank you for your comments too. I like a variety of venues, especially places which would in my mind be conducive to dates. I had not been to Carruth's before so we were all guinea pigs to this new venue together. If I feel the strength of the movie the winery chooses to air merits a meetup, then I will schedule there again. I willl, however, highlight that as a venue our audience can expect to be disturbed by others surrounding them.

    Great flick!

The nearly continuous screaming/hooting/hollering & the cigar smoke caused us to bail as soon as the intermission happened. We saw Sideways when it was first released & plan to watch it tonight via Netflix in our family room/home theater. The acoustics at the winery were awful as was the pre-pubescent behavior of the audience.

I think Carruth Cellars makes a great place to sit and visit over a glass or two of wine. But they are no longer a hidden treasure where one can see a movie and have a chance to meetup with our membership beforehand and visit too!

I apologize to any I haven't happened to meet tonight, I'm way in the back furthest towards the driveway. Grey Jacket and gray hair. Please visit after the movie!

I'm at the Venue. 200 yards south of Lomas Santa Fe, and up a driveway beside Coles Flooring. It is filling quickly, but parking nearby looks pretty good.

Stephen...I have the address for the winery on Cedros St but is that the "location" for the film?

      June 23, 2013

    • Stephen

Yes Jacki, just up their driveway.

Really love to join all of you for this venue, but I have a friend moving out of town and tonight is her going away party. Enjoy! Hope to do this next time.

I'm sure this is self-evident, but I would anticipate crawling traffic on I-5, Coast Highway, and Lomas Santa Fe too. It'll probably be quite full at the Depot park and ride as well.

Just to advise between the two Meetups (ours and North County Movie Lovers) I'll be hosting we have 39 RSVP's together joining us (at least as of this morning). As I noted below: There is at least one other meetup (Social Activities) which has this event announced too, and from them 38 more are on tap (uncorked) to attend. All in all a pretty big audience of cinephile and/or oeniphile (-sp?) meetupers.

I've been wanting to see this film again since it's first release. Love Carruth Cellars' wine and what a great idea and venue for a cinema under the stars. Plus there will be a full moon!

We saw Sideways when it was first released. We loved it & are looking forward to seeing it again at the winery. Perfect venue!

I saw this morning in a Meetup sidebar that there's another meetup - Social Happenings? I believe - with 24 RSVP'd. Some of you may belong to both, but it definitely looks to be well attended on June 23.

As an FYI: I gave Heather at the winery a general heads up that between the two meetup groups at present 18 people have RSVP'd (I know 30 days ahead of an event is a rotten time to make any estimate of actual attendance, but hey...). Her reply to me is excerpted here: "Thanks for the heads up! The Movie Night on Sunday (May 19, The Breakfast Club) was our biggest yet! 120 people. There is always a free raffle for Belly Up tickets and I tend to keep it related to the movie in some way.... the raffle for Sideways will be "Bring your own glass for a raffle ticket" ;)

Make sure they remember to bring their folding chairs!!"

we can bring our own wine?

    May 22, 2013

    • Stephen

Simple answer is no. This is not at a park, but their winery. Stone Brewery summer movies has the same guidance.

Great movie and to be at a winery while watching it-so clever Stephen.Looking forward to the event.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
