The new film by Hirokazu Kore-Eda (I Wish, Still Walking, Nobody Knows), winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, is a thoughtful, heartfelt story about the bonds of family. Two couples with 6-year-old sons learn the shocking news that their sons were switched at the hospital. Both families are faced with the dilemma of whether to keep their respective children or swap them. What is more important—blood or affection, nature or nurture? Ryota (Masaharu Fukuyama), handsome and successful, is a driven architect who spends little time with his wife and son, although he provides all the best for them. In contrast, financially struggling Yudai (Rirî Furankî) is a slovenly shopkeeper whose motto is "Put off until tomorrow everything you can," but who spends more time with his family, which includes additional siblings. The two families arrange gatherings for their children to mingle, and begin a trial system of exchanging the boys on weekends, but all does not go smoothly. The children are delightful, and the storytelling subtle and moving, seasoned with wit and warmth.

I very much enjoyed the film. It was fun to meet up with all of you and turn it into a bit of an event. Nice to meet you.

Jeff, thank you for hosting the event. I expected a melodramatic movie filled with cliches, but was pleasantly surprised. Having just returned from a year in Japan 2 months ago, the locations bring back many memories.

I made it to the 4pm showing of "Like Father, Like Son," good, authentic, sensitive. I caught "The Great Beauty" and "Invisible Woman" in La Jolla, yesterday. Nice. Especially "Great Beauty."

Thanks for bringing the film to our attention. I am definitely going to see it this weekend; however, an earlier film on Saturday will probably work better for me, so I may see the group on my way out! I'll be there Tuesday, though.
