Mount Woodson Hike

photograph

We'll hike up Mt. Woodson on the Fry-Koegel Trail and return via a steep, paved road, about 5.5 miles in all with a 1200-foot climb. The views from the summit are very good, especially from the famous "potato chip" rock, which is shown above. We've climbed Mt. Woodson before, most recently in January 2010.

Leashed dogs are permitted.

A trail map has been posted on the maps page.

We'll meet near the entrance to the Ramona Forest Fire Station on the west side of Highway 67 about three miles north of Poway Rd. (Thomas 1171 F4, N[masked] W[masked]).

SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Take I-8 east to El Cajon and then Highway 67 north to a point about three miles north of Poway Road. Park on the shoulder of Highway 67 if you can. This is a very popular hiking area, so you may have to park on the other side of the highway or on a nearby side street.

Directions to Meeting Place Sign at Meeting Place

The nominal starting time is 10:00 AM. The leader will be at the parking area by 9:30, and at 10:15 we will hit the trail. We should return to the parking area between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

Check your favorite weather page on the Internet. (I like www.weather.com.) Wear good hiking shoes and suitable clothing and take lunch, water and sun protection. Take a camera if you wish. Call or send E-mail if you have questions.

RAIN? Heavy rain will cancel the hike. If there is only a little rain, we may still hike. In doubtful cases, the leader will wait at the trailhead. You must decide whether the weather is tolerable and take appropriate protective clothing. If anyone else shows up, we will hike.

Great hike, not as hot as ever one was expecting, nice cool breeze.

I'm so glad you all survived the heat!

Yes, it was hot, but 12 of us made it to the top and Potato Chip Rock. We got back to the trailhead at 12:50 PM. Some great pics have been posted.

What a great hike and great group of people, thanks Philip! Wasn't to hot...especially at the top where there were cool breezes! Conquered big bad potato-chip(kinda),and it didn't break! : )

it was good...but would have been great if the weather is not so hot...

    Sorry too hot

    June 28, 2013

  • Philip E.

Yes, it will be HOT. We can still hike, but we will go directly up the access road. This will make the hike shorter and easier. It's what we did once before when there was a light rain. It will also make it easier for hikers to turn around if the going gets too tough.

Sorry it's going to be too HOT! I'll have to do this hike another time.

Thank you for posting this hike. Seems that most of the other groups got scared off by the heat.

Too hot for me. Heading to the beach.

    June 27, 2013

  • Philip E.

Yes, it will be HOT. If you want to start early, you can, but I cannot lead an early hike. It is not feasible to get 45 people to change their plans on short notice. I am only one person. I will be there for the 10:00 AM start.
Take plenty of WATER. I will take two or three quarts. Take a little bit of SALT, too. I will take some salted pretzels.
We should return to the parking area about 1:00 PM. The highest temperature of the day will be about 3:00 or 4:00 PM.
The July and August hikes will be easier hikes or hikes closer to the ocean.

I've hiked up the road and tried to come back the frye-kroeger trail but kinda got lost getting back to the road. Might come but 10's kind of a late start for summer hikes.

  • watson

I'll probably come back the same way so I could get my 8 miles round trip....on my own, of course. :o)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
