We'll hike up Mt. Woodson on the Fry-Koegel Trail and return via a steep, paved road, about 5.5 miles in all with a 1200-foot climb. The views from the summit are very good, especially from the famous "potato chip" rock, which is shown above. We've climbed Mt. Woodson before, most recently in January 2010.
Leashed dogs are permitted.
A trail map has been posted on the maps page.
We'll meet near the entrance to the Ramona Forest Fire Station on the west side of about three miles north of Poway Rd. (Thomas 1171 F4, N[masked] W[masked]).
SUGGESTED ROUTE FROM SAN DIEGO: Take east to El Cajon and then north to a point about three miles north of Poway Road. Park on the shoulder of if you can. This is a very popular hiking area, so you may have to park on the other side of the highway or on a nearby side street.
The nominal starting time is 10:00 AM. The leader will be at the parking area by 9:30, and at 10:15 we will hit the trail. We should return to the parking area between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
Check your favorite weather page on the Internet. (I like www.weather.com.) Wear good hiking shoes and suitable clothing and take lunch, water and sun protection. Take a camera if you wish. Call or send E-mail if you have questions.
RAIN? Heavy rain will cancel the hike. If there is only a little rain, we may still hike. In doubtful cases, the leader will wait at the trailhead. You must decide whether the weather is tolerable and take appropriate protective clothing. If anyone else shows up, we will hike.
