Sycamore Canyon/ Goodan Ranch hike + opt. lunch

Directions:
I-15: Exit onto Poway Road, and go 5 miles east to the stoplight at Garden Road.
Turn right on Garden. Keep left to stay on Garden Rd. Drive about a mile then take the 1st right onto Sycamore Canyon. Continue 2.3 miles to Sycamore Canyon's North Entrance, also called the Goodan Ranch Staging Area. (The dirt parking lot is just a few yards after you pass the intersection of Calle De Rob on the left.) Park along the road or in the dirt lot.

IMP NOTE: If you're using GPS, note that Scripps Poway Parkway passes over Sycamore Canyon Road but there is no access ramp connecting the two. Sycamore Canyon's east entrance, off Highway 67, does not connect to the North Entrance parking lot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Join us for an approximately 7 mile long totally exhilarating intermediate hike through a variety of rough and easy terrain of Sycamore Canyon Preserve/ Goodan Ranch. Hordes of hikers like to crowd up to Iron Mountain but tend to ignore this vastly under-rated gem of a place that is right within Poway. That's good for those of us who love having the trail all to ourselves.

Optional Lunch: Company Pub & Kitchen,13670 Poway Road, Poway, CA 92064
(858) 668-3365. Check out the menu @ companypubandkitchen.com

The 325-acre Goodan Ranch was a working ranch in the 1930s, and raised alfalfa to feed the horses at the Del Mar Track. Saved from development in 1991, its old ranch house, water tower and windmill were still in use until the fires destroyed them a few years ago.

This is an intermediate hike - about 3- 4 hours, depending on your pace. If you are a regular hiker you will find most of the trail quite easy; the only noticeably steep part is the 1 mile of Ridge Trail which has a lot of small ankle tripping rocks (see photo). However, I think it's easier climbing up this trail than going down it due to the rocky nature of the path. Consider it as great cardio! Hiking poles recommended. This part of the trail is similar to Iron Mountain trail but with smaller rocks. We will go slow on this part just so everyone gets up to the top without hyperventilating :)

We will stop at all turn offs to regroup and let slower hikers catch up. If you are not familiar with the trail, please do not stride off on your own because there are a lot of connecting trails. Those who like to take photos, please do not linger too long- you will need to keep close to the group.

Hike path: We will combine a few trails to total about 7 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. We'll begin at Martha's Grove, on to Sycamore Canyon Rd, past the ranger station ( short break for snack and restroom),  up Ridge Trail, down Cardiac Hill & back to the parking area via Sycamore Canyon Rd.

NO DOGS PLEASE. ALSO NO HIKER UNDER THE AGE OF 18 ON THIS HIKE. Hike not suitable for beginners or those just getting back into hiking.

I will cancel this hike if the weather forecast for this day is either rain or high heat (I don't want to risk anyone getting sun stroke).

Hiking essentials: Plenty of water (not much shade on the trail), snacks to keep up your energy, sturdy shoes with good traction and a hat are indispensable, and hiking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellant are highly recommended. Positive attitude is a must!!!
Poison oak, bees, ticks and rattlesnakes are a part of our preserves- keep an eye out for them.

Beautiful hike and quite a good pace too today considering the fact that we had a few slow hikers. Thank you all for hiking with me today. Hope you all got your heart rate and your muscles going on the ever changing terrain. Had a great time with a few of you at the Pub & Kitchen.

Just spoke to the ranger who confirmed that Goodan Ranch is open. Yay!! Double yay!!!!! See you all tomorrow. By the way, please note that this will not be a strolling through the park kind of walk. This is a 7 mile hike at a a steady pace with one steep hill.

Thank you for the heads up. The weather for Sunday looks good but I'll check with the ranger tomorrow and update accordingly.

I think you'll love this, Dawn. It's such a beautiful place, esp. in spring when all those blue lilacs bloom.
