A bunch of us are planning to hike around downtown San Diego on Saturday, March 16th and pass out food, supplies and necessities to the needy. We did this last Christmas with a big group of people, and passed out sacked lunches, fruits, juices, energy drinks, toiletries, gloves, scarfs, blankets, flashlights, and batteries to over 100 homeless people scattered across several campsites. I will plan and organize this event in such a way so that it will be very safe for the participants.
3/13/13 Update from Anthony:
Starting Time: We plan to meet at 4pm sharp on the corner of 4th and E. We will start on our hike at 4:15pm so please be on time because it will be hard to find and catch up to us once we depart to all the different campsites. This new start time will also allow us to feed the metered parking spaces just once.
Parking: There should be plenty of metered parking spaces available up and down our route on E, F and G Street. Just bring enough quarters to feed the meters for 2 hours or until 6pm because metered parking will be free after that. Or you can park in Horton Plaza free for 3 hours if you spend $10 at the mall and show that receipt at the validation booth on the 1st floor to get your parking ticket validated.
After Dinner: The hike to all the campsites will take approximately 1.5 - 2 hours and we will all meet back at 4th and E. We should be done with the hike by 6pm, and you can leave or join us for dinner on the 4th Floor in the Food Area of Horton Plaza or at a restaurant that can validate our parking tickets.
Preparation: Plan on preparing about 5-10 lunches or packages to handout, or just bring enough stuff to handout to 10 different people. We will probably encounter over 100 people during our hike so bring what you can, but any amount is sufficient :) If you are planning to give a lot of heavy items, make sure to bring a backpack, or wheeled container to pull it along the hike so you don't tire yourself out.
On Friday night at 7pm, a small group of us will meet at my friend’s house to prepare the food. She is a member of our group and has graciously offered to host the event at her house off the 56 and Camino Del Sur. If you have a lot of food and/or items to prepare and package, contact me if you want to join us and help in preparing the meals.
Take care and I will update this event soon,
