More downtown; North County is a bit of a haul from La Mesa.
Smooth jazz; "art" jazz; jazz-rock fusion, "free" jazz or "The New Thing," and in general any kind of jazz that sounds as if its creators think that just because a certain sound has never been heard before, it needs to be heard now.
Prefer smaller clubs with well-known artists, but have been known to go smaller clubs with local talent, and larger venues with well-known artists.
Too numerous to list, but: early Miles Davis, John Coltrane (up to "A Love Supreme"), MJQ, Red Garland, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Illinois Jacquet, Errol Garner, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, The Four Freshmen...
So called "straight ahead" jazz, in which the musicians play the old standards, otherwise referred to as "The Great American Songbook."
Increasingly superannuated, retired clinical psychologist, who plays some jazz/blues guitar and used to supplement his income playing and singing both jazz and blues. I am a member of, and volunteer for, KSDS, 88.3 FM.
I've commented on the group elsewhere. For this event, though, members either just weren't there, or I didn't see them.
