I'm not a big fan of smooth jazz or certain styles of fusion. Fusion can be awesome but too many mediocre jam bands call themselves fusion.
I prefer more intimate clubs (with good sound systems). There's nothing like seeing an awesome artist (like Scofield who I just saw), but I'm down for local talent as well.
MINGUS! Miles, Duke, Blakey, Scofield/MMW, Bela Fleck. I'm starting to get into McLaughlin and Holdsworth.
I'm pretty open though I tend to like Hard Bop and Fusion. Fusion's odd though, some people are incredible and others take out all the emotion, finesse and beauty.
I really love listening to all sorts of good music, but nothing matches the sheer complexity and emotional highs that jazz offers. I'm hoping to meet some folks and enjoy great shows.
