Hi. I'm a former NYer, (Brooklyn, actually). I love Bebop and Fusion. Bird, Coltrane, Mingus, Monk... you get the idea. Some newer guys like Chris Potter & Joshua Redman are musicians I'd like to see in person. I'm a Jazz 88 member, & XM RealJazz72.
North County, only because it's less of a drive and easier (read: less expensive) to park.
Most smooth Jazz. There's some crossover stuff, like Jesse Cook which is pretty good, but most of it sounds like mindless Muzac to me.
Of course, the best combo is a well-known artist in a smaller club, which is why Anthology is so cool (but not a great place for meetups). Small clubs with talented musicians are probably my favorite.
Bop & Classic: Bird, Miles, Mingus, Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, David Newman, Ron Carter. Newer guys like Joshua Redmond & Chris Potter. Fusion: John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, Chick Corea.
Bop and then Fusion in that order. Latin and Swing then follow.
The people in the group are great, and knowledgeable Jazz fans who love good music!
