Hack Night

On the third Tuesday of every month we get together and hack on javascript projects, learn from each other, and generally hang out.  Bring your projects, your questions, your ideas, and a six pack of your favorite beer.

Don't mean to put you on the defensive, it's an interesting idea. As a followup, The audio jack is not going to have the same abilities of a circuit. I'm not familiar with the limitations but obviously less. Meanwhile you don't have complete access to the audio out, at any point an incoming call, os update alert, sms etc.. could send a beep to the speaker. Just seems like a lot s sacrifice to get html5 into the mix. And I think you are going to need 2 way communication to do any of the things you mentioned. You might be interested in looking at the the leap motion (3d mouse) which has a javascript component. They were able to get 2 way communication using a browser add-on.

Who me? Oh no! Not at all! I just wanted to address everything you said. I think you are right that HTML5/Javascript is NOT the best way to control a servo, but I really want to be able to show people that web pages can interact with the real world. Thanks so much for the leap motion information. Sadly, it doesn't look that that works very well either:

I may well be fooling myself, but it's fun to try.

Sadly, I'm not going to be able to make it down from Escondido, but I'd love to hear if anyone has any feedback or ideas about this crazy Javascript / HTML5 audio project of mine:

      3. The lack of ability of web pages to control the physical world limits them in many ways. There are lots of opportunities for web based games, apps, etc... to interact in more physical ways. I'd like to feel the wind when I'm flying an online simulator, or feel the vibrations from a road race game, or an online cad program to directly control my CNC mill.

      4. This is just the first step. If I manage to reliably generate PWM, I will next attempt to generate async serial and thereby enable web page to microcontroller communication which will open up far more than just a pair of servos.

If anyone is working with node.js and mongoDB I'd love to connect.

I actually ask because I can't find any real performance comparisons on the net. I've see a comparison between a relational db in SQL with a NON-relational version of same on noSQL, but the comment was made there that the same performance increase was available by de-normalizing the relational db and staying in SQL. E.g. it's the db design, more than the engine, that makes the difference.

Here's a couple links about performance and rationale for noSQL :

I'm working a lot with Meteor and hope to find others to build some cool stuff with.

What sort of stuff? I'm interested in inventory / pricebook applications which might dovetail with Meteor. Assuming it's this:

I saw the screencast. I don't get the concept. I want the separation between server and client. Strong separated layers except for specific holes that I punch though.

Are you able to access the accelerometer data in the phone? This page has a section on doing that with HTML5 on a mobile phone:

You might take a look at https://github.com/asd... I was able to create this effect using blender (also in the repo). Currently I'm building another tool to touch up this file, ironicly as blender's original purpose was to touch-up the output of another program. Anyway this can accomplish that sort of effect giving you the data at design time instead of calculating this in real time.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
