Sierra Singles Stinson Beach to West Point Inn 3C Day Hike

Enjoy a vigorous hike up Steep Ravine Trail to the historic West Point Inn and return in time for sunset at the beach. We will pass redwood groves, waterfalls, and grand views of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco and East Bay. One of the most beautiful hikes in the Bay Area, assuming no fog. Distance 12.5 miles. This hike is best for the at least semi-experienced, that is, it is not a very good hike for beginners or those who have not hiked in years. The pace is steady, but moderate, going uphill to West Point Inn, and it is a somewhat more leisurely pace with several vista stops on the return to the beach downhill.

Cancellation: Heavy rain cancels.

Bring: Lunch, liquids, sturdy shoes, and layered clothing.  We will be walking toward the setting sun for part of the hike, so a brimmed hat and/or sun glasses are also recommended.

Meet: Stinson Beach Parking Lot, Stinson Beach, CA

Directions: From Hwy 101 take Stinson Beach/Hwy 1 exit. Continue on Hwy 1 (Shoreline) to Stinson Beach. Park entrance is on the left just past downtown Stinson Beach. The Google Maps link to the Stinson Beach parking lot in the header for this post can be used for more exact directions.

Carpools: You may make carpool arrangements by offering or requesting rides in comments below or e-mailing other hike participants directly. It is best to check below to see whether the ride you want is already being offered before posting a separate request for a ride, or the person offering the ride may assume that you made a separate post because you do not want a ride from them. Traditional carpool start locations for this hike are 9:00AM at any of (1) Rockridge BART (at the east entrance/taxi area off Keith Ave.), (2) North Berkeley BART (entrance), or (3) in San Francisco at the northwest corner of Geary Blvd. and Funston Ave.

Leader: Tom Hinshaw ([masked], or home phone (510)[masked])

Vanessa, I was going to carpool, driving my car from Emeryville, but only got 1 rider. Perhaps we should join forces and the 3 of us go in either my car or yours...?

Carpool from North Berkeley Bart / Berkeley anyone?

    November 7, 2013

    • Doan D.

I havent hear back from Robin/Jeff/Marcus. So I am not sure what the deal is. If they dont need a ride, I might as well hitch a ride with someone else instead of driving. I will make up my mind by 5pm today. Another person, Paul also need a ride.

Is the hike 2000 elevation gain?

    1 · November 18, 2013

    • Tom H.

Highest point on this trail is 2000 feet, but I figure the ups and downs of the trail will like add another 200 or 300 feet to that. So rough estimate is around 2250 feet.

One more note, just to be certain it is clear to newcomers -- the park does not allow dogs on any of the trails we will be on. Service dogs are an exception, but even service dogs are required to be on leash. Rangers do patrol the trails for violations of these rules in my experience. For our hikes, as a rule non-service dogs are not permitted unless specifically listed as allowed in the hike description, and you must get permission from the hike leader before the hike to bring a service dog (i.e., don't just show up with your dog without checking first).

@Hazel, Rachel and Lily, too bad u RSVPed late, i was looking to split a zipcar with ppl, but now im going with Evelyne & crew... Maybe Gia or Jackie F depending on the route they take? :)

    November 21, 2013

  • Tom H.

It is looking like we will have somewhere around 35 people on the hike. Just a caution to those who have not done this hike with me before; if you are uncertain of your hiking ability, new to hiking, or have not hiked in years -- this is probably not a good hike for you. This hike of 12.5 miles and over 2000 feet should only be attempted if you have done hikes in the last three months of at least 10 miles and over 1000 feet. I anticipate that we will frequently be averaging a pace that is over 2 mph. We will be under some time constraints to get back to the trail head before sundown, so I likely will not be able give those who straggle far behind much time to rest. If you tarry over an hour behind the group, not only will you be walking in the dark at the end, but you could find your car locked overnight in the parking lot after 6PM and incur a hefty ticket.

Can't make it due to a conflict in the afternoon. The forecast looks good and will hike the Matt Davis->Steep Ravine->Coastal loop earlier in the morning.

  • Gia

Is this hike better for running shoes or hiking boots?

    November 18, 2013

    • Tom H.

For this long a hike and this type of terrain, you are definitely better off with hiking boots over jogging shoes. If you have shoes designed for running on trails perhaps, but the average jogging shoe is designed to provide a cushion on flat cement not a rocky trail. Your feet will likely be blistered and sore after 12.5 miles of rocky trail in standard running shoes. Though, bad fitting boots will also make your feet sore.

      Thanks for the advice, Tom!

We could all meet there, you could all park your cars there in my complex, which is very safe, and carpool from there....let me know if you are in... my email is: [masked]
