Mt Diablo Necklace Hike

Details:

Climb above the winter fog on a leisurely to moderately paced hike around the mountain. Includes optional 1/2 mi walk around the Summit Interpretive Trail following the hike.

If you are the type of hiker who likes to go fast, take minimal short breaks, and get back really early this is not the hike for you. Mellow hikers are especially welcome.

Distance/Elevation: 2B (8-1/2 miles / nearly 2000 ft of uphill)

Leader: Steve Bakaley

Return to cars: Approximately 4:30PM

Cancellation: Any rain cancels.

Cost: $10 parking fee.

Bring: lunch, liquids, warm clothing, and boots are strongly recommended because there is some steep downhill with loose rocks.

Meet: 10:00am at Juniper Campground in Mt. Diablo State Park.

Directions: Take Hwy 680 to the Diablo Rd exit in Danville. Go east toward Mt Diablo and watch for the park entrance on the left. Juniper Campground has a big parking lot to the left of the road close to the top of the mountain.

Carpool: Leader at Walnut Creek BART 9:00am. I recommend you arrange your own carpools where it is more convenient for you.

Hi Steve, I'm sorry I couldn't make it. Will you be leading this hike in the future? Thanks, Livia

Hi Livia. I will next lead this hike in Jan 2015 however, a friend of mine, Jake Van Akkeran leads for the Mt Diablo Interpretive Association and he will be leading nearly an identical hike April 18 and again May 18. Check out the MDIA website. Jake is a really good leader and his pace is similar to mine. I pirated this hike from him.

Really nice group of people. A bit windy but a really good hiking temperature. Not a cloud in the sky. Saw the Sierras.

    Hi Folks, a few items:

    1. The extended forecast calls for sunshine and high temps in the upper 50's. Please bring warm layered clothing or you will be very uncomfortable on the ridge tops and lunch/rest stops.

    2. There is a pretty large wait list. If you are not planning to come, please change your RSVP and not at the very last moment.

    3. Allow for 30 minutes between exiting the 680 freeway and getting to Juniper Camp via Diablo and South Gate Roads. People arriving late will hold up the group and it may be windy and chilly at Juniper.

    4. If you live near or will be passing by Walnut Creek BART, please consider stopping there and being a driver. I am going to take riders in my car on a first come - first served basis (no reservations) and would feel bad about having to turn people away, especially those who rode BART in hopes of getting a ride.
