Lake Chabot Loop Hike

Details:

Take a moderate to leisurely paced day hike through the eucalyptus and oak of Anthony Chabot Regional Park. Highlights include Lake Chabot, Chabot View, and the Cascade Trail. Be prepared for mud and lots of poison oak.

If you are the type of hiker who likes to go fast, take minimal short breaks, and get back really early this is not the hike for you. Mellow hikers are especially welcome.

Distance/Elevation: Feels like 8 miles and a bit over 1100 feet of elevation gain.

Leader: Steve Bakaley

Return to cars: approx 4:30 PM.

Cancellation: Heavy rain cancels. The hike is mostly in forest.

Cost: Free

Bring: lunch and liquids.

Meet: 10:30 am at Marciel Gate, Anthony Chabot Regional Park.

Directions: From South, take Hwy 580 to the Redwood Rd exit in Castro Valley and go left several miles past the golf course to the Marciel Gate. From North take Hwy 13 to Redwood Rd exit and go left to Redwood Rd, go south on Redwood Rd to Marciel Gate.

Carpool: Leader at Walnut Creek BART 9:15 am. I recommend you arrange your own carpools where it is more convenient for you.

    Bob & Ruby,
The map is inaccurate. That's because our fearless leader, who claims to be proficient with technology, is incompetent at accurately identifying sites on Google Maps. The location should have been mapped as Redwood Rd & Marciel Rd, Castro Valley, CA, 3.2 miles south of the location shown on the map linked to this hike listing.

(And lest anyone think I'm being mean to Steve, we're hiking buds. Hey, if you can't harass your friends, who can you harass?)

Meetup maps are terrible for addresses that are trailheads. I wish there was a dot commer out there in NYC to teach them GPS and multiple names within parks. Thanks for the clarifications!

    Bob & Steve--
Thanks for the location correction. Looks like it's at the turnoff for the gun range.

Actually I hadn't touched the map until tonight. I've changed it twice, saved it twice, came back later and it was back to the screwed up place near Skyline. It ain't near Skyline.

    December 7, 2012

    • Bob S.

I just now looked at the map, and the location now looks accurate.

    Ruby--
When I click on the map link it shows the location as being on Redwood Road about 1/3 of the way from the stables at Skyline towards Castro Valley. There is a major trailhead in that area, which I'm assuming is the Marciel Gate trailhead.

Not a good assumption. Use the written directions.

      December 7, 2012

  • Ruby

? On directions: the map tool is saying this is in Oakland. The marker is at the horse stables at Skyline Blvd and Redwood Rd by the retirement home. Is that right?

Hello! regarding the poison oak--is the trail generally as clear as the picture above, or is it hard to avoid the vegetation?

    December 6, 2012

    • Bob S.

There is only one area where there may be poison oak encroaching on the trail, if my memory is correct, and it's easy to avoid if you're paying attention.

Hey everyone, I'm headed to an event in Berkeley after the hike now so won't be able to drive folks from SF, unless you would like a ride to the hike and then to Berkeley BART. If that's the case, send me your contact info!

My calendar shows that I signed up for a Park Skyline, Oakland hike on Dec. 22. I don't see this listed any more. Has it been cancelled?

    December 3, 2012

    • Bob S.

See the Sierra Singles Pre-Christmas Hike listing for that day.

      December 3, 2012

  • Steve B.

The following is the Sierra Club's policy on dogs on outings. This policy can also be found on the Meetup site under "pages", at http://www.meetup.com/sanfranciscobay/pages/Dogs_on_Hikes/

Dogs or other pets are permitted only on outings that are pre-advertised or otherwise identified as dog- or pet-permitted outings. Pet-permitted outings must be only to places where pets are legal, and must be only to places that are acceptable to the chapter's outings and conservation committees. Service animals, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, are not considered pets and are not subject to this rule. However, if you have a service animal, contact the leader in advance to insure reasonable accommodations can be made.

Since this outing was not listed as a canine outing, dogs are not allowed.

I would like to get a ride from anyone coming from San Francisco. Thanks!

    December 3, 2012

I like that it's a moderate hike, and begins late in the morning. I might not be able to spend the whole day, but I'm going to try.
