Mt Diablo Necklace Hike

Details:

Climb above the winter fog on a leisurely to moderately paced hike around the mountain. Includes optional 1/2 mi walk around the Summit Interpretive Trail following the hike.

If you are the type of hiker who likes to go fast, take minimal short breaks, and get back really early this is not the hike for you. Mellow hikers are especially welcome.

Distance/Elevation: 2B (8-1/2 miles / nearly 2000 ft of uphill)

Leader: Steve Bakaley

Return to cars: Approximately 4:30PM

Cancellation: Any rain cancels.

Cost: $10 parking fee.

Bring: lunch, liquids, warm clothing, and boots are strongly recommended because there is some steep downhill with loose rocks.

Meet: 10:00am at Juniper Campground in Mt. Diablo State Park.

Directions: Take Hwy 680 to the Diablo Rd exit in Danville. Go east toward Mt Diablo and watch for the park entrance on the left. Juniper Campground has a big parking lot to the left of the road close to the top of the mountain.

Carpool: Leader at Walnut Creek BART 9:00am. I recommend you arrange your own carpools where it is more convenient for you.

This was my first hike with this group. It was a good challenge. I planned for everything but the wind.

great hike….even without the sun….maybe it was all the lovely fellow hikers
that made me forget the lack of sun.

This was a record turnout for this hike for me. 54 people and pretty cohesive. Amazing given that the weather wasn't what I hoped for. Saw manzanita in bloom, flowering red currant on the summit trail, milk maids on the Oak Knoll trail, and some mustard throughout the route.

Great. Some people didn't like the temperature but it was just perfect for me :) Would have chosen the full route but I had to join my car mates, and then it started raining for real so maybe that was the right choice anyway.

The very few of us who did the originally planned route stayed dry. We were back to our cars at 4 and it really didn't start raining until we were driving down the mountain. The rain didn't hit in earnest until we were completely off the mountain.

I am driving from SF near the Giants ballpark. I can give 3 people a ride if anyone needs a lift. I don't mind stopping at Bart stations along the way if needed.

    January 4, 2013

Oh, and I'll be there at 8:30

Annemarie, Matt, Alyosha, Ian and others interested to carpool from Berkeley-Oakland. I suggest to meet at Ashby Bart, there is big park n ride. Rockridge doesn't have it. So, at 8:50, leaving at 9:10am?

    January 3, 2013

I'm not sure what you guys mean by a park & ride, as there is no official Park & Ride lot at either Ashby or Rockridge BART. However, there are parking lots at both stations. If it was me, I would go to Rockridge, not only because of the Flea Market at Ashby, but also because Rockridge has plenty of room in their parking lots on the weekends. It is easy to get to and easy to get back on 24 eastbound. There is also the Market Hall across the street from the station where you can get morning coffee and pastries. The traditional Sierra Club meeting point for carpools is at the Rockridge BART station on the east (hill) side of College Avenue at the base of the stairway leading into the station.

Hi Margarita-you can take me out of this list for this carpool. I will not be able to make it. Thank you so much for coordinating though.

Steve, Where at WC BART? I can drive and take some people. Will appreciate following you to the Juniper Campground.

Guys, I'm getting a bunch of ride requests from the 9AM Walnut Creek BART. I need 1-2 drivers at Walnut Creek BART at 9. I don't want to have to turn anyone away for lack of room. Oh, and based on the current Accuweather forecast, I am not planning to do my traditional post-hike interpretative walk. If the rain comes early I can shave 1-1/2 miles off the route. Hopefully we'll be back at the cars before it starts without my having to do that. No one-hour lunch tomorrow.

Hi Annemarie! I'm also in the city. I send you an email earlier... do you still have room for tomorrow's hike? Happy sharing costs.

    Thank you!

Anyone from the Palo Alto / Mountain View area who'd like the carpool? I'm happy to drive or ride shotgun...

    December 10, 2012

    • Suhas

Not sure of Saurabh's plans, but I guess we all can share a ride from South Bay. How many spots do you have in your car Amrik?

      January 2, 2013

    • Amrik G.

Hello Suhas. Receiving your emails but looks like my responses not reaching back to you. Yes, I have a sport for you in addition to Ahila, Jim and Jessica. I will be picking all of you at Sycamore park n ride @ 680. I will be there at 9:00 AM. Feel free to text me at[masked] if required. Let me know your plans.

Guys, be sure to bring warm layers. Doesn't look like we'll have a temperature inversion :-( so it's going to be chilly. You will want to be able to remove layers prior to uphills and put them on when going down hill and when we stop.

    January 3, 2013

  • sonia p.

Will we be stopping for lunch between[masked]pm? Somewhere in that window of time?

    January 3, 2013

    • Steve B.

Sorry, but where and when we have lunch depends on many factors, most important being location and second being group size. There is a rest stop at Murchio Gap before lunch. You will want to have a snack there so that you aren't starving by the time we hit lunch. If you need to monitor blood sugar, I suggest you bring a sack of GORP and continually snack throughout the hike.

Is it possible to do a short version of this hike to return early?

    January 3, 2013

    • Steve B.

No. If you need to return early you should not do the hike. It's a loop.
