Santa Teresa Skills day (Co-Ed skills workshop)

We seem to have found a lot of interest in doing these sorts of events.  So let's do one on this side of the hill for those that can't get over to SC that early in the morning or need to be closer to home on weekends.

We'll follow the same format that we're creating for the Jane's Northstar Pre-Ride.  Starting with some warm-up and parking lot drills before moving onto some beginner level trail features.  From there we session my Stiles Demo ride loop.  Plan on being out for several hours on this ride, as the intention is to do multiple loops of the same 3+ miles.  This gives everyone a chance to see the line from different angles as they ride behind different leaders.  It also helps to develop more confidence as you begin to memorize sections of the trail.  Trust me it works.  I can't tell you how many people comment to me about my speed or flow down this loop.  My secret?  Repetition.  That's it.  I've ridden Stiles literally hundreds of times and that's the only reason I'm any good at it.  It's the perfect sort of loop to practice good bike position and handling habits, which we'll help you to learn.  Hopefully you don't have any bad habits, but it's okay if you do.  That's what this ride is all about.  Helping you to become a more confident and stronger rider.

As always a helmet is required for all of our rides.  Also because this ride will see us working on skills and spending a lot of time on rocky trails I recommend pads for your elbows and knees.  They help to boost confidence and can really be the difference between nailing a section and walking it.

I'll see you all out there,

David B.

p.s. the Rsvp limit will increase on this ride if I have extra help from additional SJMTB Organizers.

Thanks again to everyone for coming out to work on skills with us. I've got some more plans for the rest of the year and into the wet season. The great thing about these sorts of skills clinics is that you don't need trails to make them fun and effective. Look out for a progression series featuring a graduation ride where we'll try to put everything together on some amazing trails.

Wow! David, Jennifer, Sam, and Tushar put a lot of work into the Santa Teresa Skills day and I was sufficiently challenged. I tried new things. Didn't do everything correctly, but I finished up the day with a smile. I want everyone to know that events like these are priceless and it's a great feeling when SJMTB inspires me to be a better rider.

Well said. These events are helping us become better riders and it does boost our confidence. Oh, and learning how to do wheelies....priceless.

Many thanks to David for organizing this skills day and to all the other leaders, Jennifer, Sam and Tosa for their assistance. I have learned so much from this group! The ride was very helpful since we can apply what was learned from the drills.

Dave, I can't make it. The little one kept the wife up all night. I've got the kids while she gets some sleep. 1.5 miles away. So close and yet so far :-(

Anyone have the coordinates for the parking lot? Can't seem to tell where the parking area is from the map location link. Thanks!

    September 27, 2013

    • David

The parking lot is easy though... just drive up Bernal road into the hill, then take the left into the park. Follow that road all the way to the last lot on the road. Don't forget to pay at the first lot thoug.

    • Mike C

      Thanks, guys!

      September 28, 2013

  • Stan

Where do I park outside if I don't want to pay for parking and how long of ride to get from there to the end of the parking lot?

    September 27, 2013

    • David

I would recommend parking at heaton moore. You can ride up bernal or the trail that leads up along side from bernal on the left.

Hey everyone. Just wanted to make sure you all saw that I opened up the list a bit. It looks like we'll have our newest Ride Org Jennifer Joy joining us for the fun. She's a really talented rider and really enjoys teaching and learning skills. It's going to be a great day of learning for the SJMtb crew.

    Cheers,
    David

sound's good. Sam is planning on coming out too to help with some more advanced stuff. We should be breaking into a few different groups.

So as of right now I have myself and Dean setup to do skills drills with you all. I'm going to see if there is any interest among our other leaders to lead an advanced skills clinic along side with our beginner skills ride. Those of you that are worried perhaps about the skill level required for these trails keep in mind that we'll spend the majority of the day in the parking lot doing drills. The on trail time will be only one loop unless people want to try more loops after the session loop.

I'll work out a more concrete curriculum for the day, but expect to do some basic body position, cornering and braking drills.

I'm at north star on Sunday. So Saturday is the only day I have for it to be picked up. Isn't the demo ride before this ride. I can bring it with me on that ride.
