Ride & Hike to Berry Creek Falls - Beginners+

~Alternate Sunday ride to other SC trails that are too water logged!!

Sometimes it's fun to bike to a beautiful destination even if you don't have to navigate a bunch of rock and root gardens to get there. Oh yeah, how about a gradual climb?! Doesn't feel like climbing at all and you still get a lot of speed on the ride out.

Park at Waddell Creek/Big Basin's Rancho del Oso entrance along Hwy 1. (16 miles north of the last stoplight in Santa Cruz). This is a 12 mile out-and-back ride on fire road and double track well-covered by redwoods that's great for beginners. The walk to the three falls is approx. 2 miles round trip. However, Berry Creek falls is just a half mile from where the bike legal trail ends. We can decide when we get to the first falls if we want to continue.

Don't forget:

- second pair of shoes if you don't want to walk in your bike shoes

- bike lock for where the bike legal trail ends We can also share several bikes to a lock. My cable lock will work for 5 bikes.

- rain gear and WARM layers you're willing to get muddy

Lunch at the Whale City Bakery/Grill in Davenport afterward for those who are interested.

Ser Fredrick. Thnkx 4 ur coment of the picture of me in the creek. I love jumping in the water and enjoy getting wet. Riding in the mud has it's challenges and helps to build more endurance and make us more aware and sharp when riding on dry dirt.

It's a bummer that my lens got wet and I couldn't get the focus I wanted in the middle of the ride. Oh well, uploaded the best shots I had.

The map link is a bit short so continue another mile or
So after it says you've arrived. Then you'll see signs for Rancho Del Oso and restrooms on the left.

I'm going to throw this question out here. So uh how safe is this lock up spot? I'm bringing the cheaper of my 2 bikes and even then I'm a little wary of leaving a $4000+ bike out of my sight.

    • Sara P.

I've locked my $3500 bike up there several times and been comfortable, but everyone needs to decide what they're comfy with. If people are still weary when we get there, we can determine who wants to go in shifts.

Happy to carpool with others or offer two riders/bikes space in my van from SF along Hwy 1.

SO due to the rain, Sara and I have moved our rides to this awesome location where we can get a beginner and up friendly ride in and see a beautiful waterfall. Hope you all can make it and dress appropriately! I don't know about YOU, but I cannot wait to ride....
