Black Mountain Backpack Camp

Monte Bello Open Space Preserve is home to the Black Mountain Backpack Camp, the only site on District lands where visitors can spend the night under the stars.

Only one-half hour from the midpeninsula cities below, the camp often serves as the first stopping place for backpackers wishing to hike from the valley to the coast. The camp is a 1.5-mile hike from the Monte Bello Open Space Preserve parking lot on Page Mill Road and includes a 500-foot uphill climb.

Camp Information:

Chemical toilets and water for washing are provided. Water is non-potable; campers must bring a water purifier or carry in their own drinking water. There is an outhouse and a pay phone  Campfires are prohibited; a cook stove is allowed in designated areas only. There are no trash cans at the campground, and campers are required to pack out their own trash. The surrounding Preserve is closed a half hour after sunset, and campers are required to remain in the campground after that time.

Our group:

Fun loving mountain bike riders. looking for an excuse to ride all weekend. We rented all the camp sites. Currently our group is ~8-10 people. We can accomodate another 4-6.

We will have transportation of our goods up to the campsite but not down (must carry goods and garbage out). So water and food are good bets to have the truck pack up Friday night. All goods to be transported need to be dropped off Friday am--location TBD

You will need tent, sleeping bag, bike, food, and beverages (bring evening drink to share). The trail down to the cars at the montebello parking lot is an undulating single track --so carefully consider what you think you can bike down.

We plan to go up Friday after work to set up camp. Ride all day saturday and Sunday. We will pack up and leave ~3 pm Sunday.

Its a good idea to car pool if possible. We will need car make/model/lic # for permits. Think we need this by Thursday

There is a $2.00/person/night camp fee that will collected at the site (paid to Jeff or Sandi)

Sandi will field questions that come in through Meetup between now and time of departure.

K I have to leave there by noon on Sat. I am totally in but wanted to know if anyone would be interested in a ride earlier then 10 am? not sure of the distances, speed or technicality of ride you guys had in mind but i would love to get at least 10 miles in before i leave. And although i have be known to ride trails solo I make it a point not to do this on unknown trails :-D
also I can show up anytime on Friday if someone wants to come out early :-D
These are just ideas so if it does not work out at least i will get to meet some of you guys!
cant wait to meet you all
other then the $2/ night is there any other fee?

Forgot to add: you can go for one night or both OR if you just want to join us for a ride Sat or Sun---that works too. Very Flexible. We will likely leave the campsite each am about 10 or 11

Yes---soooo many trails. You can connect Saratoga Gap with all the trails in Stevens Canyon and even the Russian Ridge area. We ride it all.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
