Hi Jim,

Excellent suggestions.

I agree, the Lynda courses are great.

I also wanted to point out a site I recently encountered that might be helpful to folks who are just getting started with Wordpress:

Hello Everyone – it was nice meeting you all yesterday and I look forward to participating as the group develops.

Jason – I appreciate your offer to setup some online tools and I’ll offer to help as an Admin, but I’d suggest that we first let some of the brainstorming ideas percolate a bit before you spend the time and effort. Online tools are great for tactics, but what’s our strategic plan? What are the group’s goals and objectives? Do we want to keep things very loose and informal or add more structure?  Do we want to establish some milestones? For example, what can we accomplish by Labor Day? Personally speaking, deadlines bring focus to a project and that’s a good thing if I’m getting paid, but that may not be what the group wants.

As an aside, I subscribe to an online library of video tutorials at Lynda.com (www.lynda.com). There are about 6 hours of tutorials on WP.com and the self-hosted version. In addition, there are courses on Drupal and Joomla. The courses are broken into 4-6 minute videos that you can access for a particular task or to view the entire course. It costs $25/mo but it’s been very helpful for me.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi folks,

Just wanted to let you know that if you go to

and click "Track this message board" at the top of the page, then you will start to receive a daily summary of any posts to the message board. This might be a good way to start with asking any questions you weren't able to find an answer for while at the meetup.

I heard some interest from folks in checking out the Drupal user group as well. To be notified of that, you need to create a login here: http://groups.drupal.org/santa-cruz or you can just follow the RSS feed.

Looking at the drupal site gives me an idea: we could try using Wordpress as a sort of community hub. http://santacruzgeeks.com/ is built on top of http://buddypress.org/ which is itself is built on top of http://mu.wordpress.org/ We could use MU or Buddypress, then put up a calendar http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-events/ and forum http://bbpress.org/ there. It's even possible to integrate a wiki http://www.rapprich.com/wordpress/wikipress (though that might not work with MU....) Just an idea. We can try the Meetup tools for a while and see if we think we need more flexibility as time goes on, or if there is already serious interest in this, I can look into starting to get it set up. (Would love some help with that though, so feel free to volunteer!)
