Who started this group and when?
From Peter Weyzen: I haven't been able to keep track of it, but I believe that we started the hiking group in 2004. It was started because of an idea a friend had. It wasn't my idea. But, we took his idea and ran with it. The first incarnation of the group formed on Yahoo Groups. And, we did our first hike in January at the coldest place in winter -- Fall Creek. I believe that was 7 hikers.

In general, no one pays for this. But, in order to maintain ourselves here on Meetup.com, members of the group are expected to make a small annual donation. All of the money collected is spent on maintaining the group's online presences.[/url].May I bring my dog on a hike?
Most of our hikes take place in state parks, and the state doesn't seem to like dogs, so no. Occasionally, we will do a "dog friendly" hike. The hike invitation will be flagged as "dog-friendly" if that's the case.May I bring my friends on a hike?
Yes and No. When you rsvp for a hike, make sure to include the number of guests you plan to bring. Your guests must be men.How fast do you hike?
We all hike at our own speed. Periodically we wait for everyone to catch up and take a few minutes rest. That being said, if you are a beginning hiker that isn't in good shape then most of our hikes probably aren't for you. Look for hikes that are specifically for beginners. Most hikes are steep and rugged. If you have concerns please email the hike organizer or post a comment before the hike.Do I always need to RSVP?
It helps the organizer if you rsvp "Yes" when you are planning to attend a hike. Hikes with insufficient rsvps may be canceled. If you rsvp "No" you can add a comment about why you aren't interested in a particular hike which keeps you in touch with others in the group. Also, if you rsvp "No" you won't receive additional email reminders about the hike.What if I don't know anyone at the hike?
Just start talking. It works every time.What if I'm late?
We generally wait a few minutes past the posted starting time but that isn't guaranteed. We do NOT wait for everyone who has signed up. If you are habitually late then aim for 15 minutes before the start time.Please stop sending me all those reminder emails
Sorry, the meetup software doesn't give you or me any control over that. Meetup tech support says the best way to reduce it is to setup an email filter and either put all meetup emails into a separate email folder or automatically delete the ones you don't want to see based on the subject line. If you aren't sure how to do this with your email try asking a 10 year old to figure it out. You'll be surprised!Do you ever cancel hikes at the last minute?
Many things can cancel or move a hike including: rain, too few rsvps, fire, park closures for various reasons. The organizer will give as much notice as possible both by email to all who rsvped for the hike and by updating the web page. Check your email and the web page as late as possible before a hike especially if you are the only rsvp or one of a few. What if I need to carpool from a different location?
You can mention this in your rsvp comment or in the comment area for the hike in question. Many people will not recheck the web page after they rsvp so it's also a good idea to check each person that has rsvped yes and see where they are coming from and then email them directly. (Click on their picture, read where they are from, click on "Send Email" to email them).What if I want a longer/shorter hike or one of your hikes at a different time/day
